rlyblonde Reveals Her Dream Collab And Favorite Song Off Of Her New Debut EP ‘Fantasy’

A star in the making!

Rising artist known as rlyblonde is bringing pop and punk together with her amazing music. Today, she released her debut EP titled ‘Fantasy’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with rlyblonde about her stage name, the music scene in New York, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue making music?

R: “I think I’ve always wanted to make music, in a way. I’ve always been a performer, a singer. I’ve been working and surrounded by so many amazing musicians for years now, (working as a photographer) that there were just so many small moments I felt sort of left out, or a little jealous. I remember being in the car driving to a friend’s film shoot with this amazing group of girls who were pretty much all artists, and they were all taking turns sharing their music on the car speaker. I was so impressed and I just felt like, shit, where is my music to share? Wouldn’t it be cool if I could do that too?”

How did you come up with the name ‘rlyblonde’?

R: “It’s just been my online moniker for as long as I can remember! My first Instagram account in high school was actually just “rlyblonde,” my Tumblr was “rlyblonde,” my Flickr account. I was pretty on-line in high school and it really influenced my creativity as a photographer. But the name was just always the same and so when it came time to make music, it felt sorta wrong to name myself anything else.”

Tell us more about your amazing debut EP ‘Fantasy’.

R:Oh gosh, thank you. She’s my baby, my pop-star dreams realized. “Fantasy” is fun, it’s sarcastic. It’s me figuring out who I am, it’s me being a little bratty. It’s kind of like a little love letter to NYC. It sort of encapsulates this time in my life where I was dissatisfied, the feelings that come with that, and then this evolution into figuring out what I really want from life. Maybe not having it all yet, but realizing there’s something out there on the horizon to strive towards.”

If you had to choose, what is your favorite song off of the EP and why?

R: “Although “Fantasy” will always be my baby, my favorite right now is probably “My Way.” It’s the most earnest song, even though it still has a bit of humor to it. Sonically it moves in a direction that I’m excited to explore a bit more. It still makes me emotional. Like, my god, all this time I didn’t realize, I could actually just pursue my dreams. Actually I’m in control of my life, who knew?!”

What is your songwriting process usually like?

R: “I wrote the EP very much alone in my living room! I led with lyrics first for some of the songs and I led with guitar lines first for others. Some of the songs even with whatever loop I made on GarageBand first. But it all was very much solo, I had to get the songs to a place of absolutely loving them how they were before I could bring them into the studio. I think it was a pride thing probably, or maybe a thing of just wanting them to feel genuine. I didn’t want anything to get lost by the time they were on the actual EP.”

How would you personally describe the music scene in Brooklyn/New York?

R: “A lot of people say there’s no music here which is just such a lie. There are countless shows every night you could go to and be wowed by. I love going to a random show and seeing a band I’ve never heard of. I’ve been personally really lucky to have connected so early on to so many artists here and continue now to meet more artists who I’m inspired by. I feel like a strange hybrid, shooting concerts one night, shooting an artist in my studio the next, and then playing my own show a day later. I have a lot of easy ways of connecting with people which I’m really grateful for. I think any city or any creative “scene” can feel intimidating if you don’t know anyone, or don’t know where to start. But sometimes a dm goes a long way! Or just hanging out at a show and talking to the artist later. It’s really easy to meet people if you just put yourself out there. And as always, there’s going to be people who vibe with you and there’s gonna be people who don’t, and I think a lot of life generally is just learning where to put your energy. You can find the circle you want here. It’s also always evolving, which I think is really cool.”

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

R: “Gosh…. I don’t even know…. I should probably say some big iconic artist or some legend or something but truthfully I’m a huge fan of Marisa Maino, she’s a solo artist and also part of the TRAMP STAMPS and I just think she’s a genius songwriter. I would love to just shoot the shit or be in a session with her.”
