Her first album is here!
You are probably one of the millions of people who stream the latest from relatable and expressive music artist Catie Turner (and if you are, you’ve got some great taste). She just released a handful of new tracks for her debut album “Blue Alchemy” and honestly, has changed every day since it’s release.
We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Catie about her 70s vibe, her exciting tour, American Idol, and more!
We are obsessed with your single “Who Am I?”! The message behind it resonates so strongly with the addiction of comparison and the balance of trying to fit in and stand out. What would be your advice to listeners who are going through an identity crisis?
C: “Thank you so much! I think my best piece of advice – that I need to take myself – is to ride it out. You do know exactly who you are, you are just scared of other people seeing it! If I’m really feeling lost, I always go back to the shows/ music I loved when I was 13 and the most self-assured. Doctor Who loves to see me coming!”
You are going full vintage 70s and we couldn’t be more obsessed! From the iconic pop-artists from the decade still on repeat today to the go-go boots that we’ll never take off, what do you love most about this era?
C: “I love the freedom of expression. Raspy vocals, untamed hair, and uncontrolled movement across the stage. Music truly felt like what it inherently is: magic.”
When it comes to your newly released debut album “Blue Alchemy”, if you had to choose, what is your favorite track on the upcoming project?
C: “That’s a hard question! Right now, I’d say my favorite song is the song “Rich Housewives.” I think it’s the first love song I ever wrote that didn’t have an underbelly of melancholia. It’s about loving the simple things.”
You first gained attention from Season 16 of American Idol. Looking back on that experience (which was somehow eight years ago?) how do you think you’ve evolved as an artist since then?
C: “Oh wow, that’s terrifying! Time flies by so fast. I was so young on the show, so most of my evolution as an artist has come from simply growing up. When I was on American Idol, I had never even held hands with someone romantically; I was part time homeschooled, only going in for electives to keep me social; I could barely even hold eye contact with strangers. I had so
little experience to write about and relied heavily on my imagination and the world inside my bedroom. I feel like the show was the first time I started living, and that changed everything.”
With over 180 million streams on just Spotify alone, and a dedicated and passionate fanbase, what has been your reaction to your success?
C: “I’m always surprised, to be honest. It doesn’t feel real. I never saw any of this coming, but I am so grateful for the opportunity to pursue what I love. It is the biggest blessing I have ever received.”
Catie you are going on tour! This is a nationwide tour from the east coast to the west coast. Is there a stop you are most excited for?
C: “I’m so excited! It’s going to be amazing! I’m excited for Columbus, Ohio, because my first internet friend is coming with her family to see me. I haven’t seen her in over 10 years, so I’m thrilled. Music is bringing me closer to the people I love and reuniting me with old, dear friends. And of course I’m excited for Denver, Colorado because that drive is absolutely stunning. A dreamy playlist while you drive through the mountain is bliss. Let’s just say I’m excited for all of the stops for their own special reasons!”
