sunsetto On His Songwriting Process, Music Inspirations, And New Single ‘late to the party’

With a rising fanbase and half a Million streams on just Youtube alone, you have to have heard about sunsetto. Now, the Toronto artist is back and better than ever today with the release of his new single ‘late to the party’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with sunsetto on his journey since his debut single, upcoming music, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music? 

S: ‘I’ve been obsessed with pop music and pop culture since I was a young kid. I think the first time I realized I wanted to pursue a career in music is when I got invited to my first ever songwriting camp. I met songwriters that make a living traveling the world writing songs and that just blew my mind. I knew I had to give it my all. For some reason, I believed I could do it too, and I was right.’

Tell us about your amazing new single “late to the party.” What is the meaning behind the song?

S: “Thank you, I’m glad you like it! I wrote the song at a time when I felt I was spreading myself thin. I was gaining traction with my music on an international scale for the first time ever. This motivated me to work hard everyday, but it also created distance between me and certain people in my life. It became bittersweet, because while I was growing, I was also outgrowing certain relationships. This song really embodies that feeling for me.”

What is your songwriting process usually like?

S: “I use my phone a lot during the songwriting process. The initial melody or rhythm almost always comes from a voice memo I recorded on my phone while I was walking, cleaning, or even showering. Sometimes I’ll start with a title that means something to me and work from that. Sometimes I’ll start with a line or just a feeling, and sometimes I just make a beat or play some chords and the song just spills out. The process varies so much that it’s hardly a process, but my phone is definitely my most useful instrument.”

Who would you say are your biggest music inspirations?

S: “Kid Cudi, Post Malone, and Joji.”

You have received over 600K streams on just Spotify alone. What’s your reaction to this?

S: “It’s very encouraging to know that my music is resonating with people, and somewhere out there people are living their lives and making memories with my music. Realizing that the numbers are a representation of an actual group of real people is super exciting and inspiring.”

How would you personally describe the Toronto music scene?

S: “Personally, I don’t feel like I can describe it that well as there is still so much for me to see and discover. But, I know that the people and musicians I’ve met here since last fall are amazing people and super talented, so that’s how I would describe the scene that I’ve come to know.”

Can we expect more music/projects from you in the future?

S: “Yeah! I’m sitting on some music that I absolutely love. Right now I’m introducing each song one at a time to give the music the spotlight I feel it deserves, and also to set the scene and the mood for a project in the future with more surprises. My sound was evolving so fast because I was growing so much over the past year since my first song “don’t leave” came out. I’ve finally landed sonically where I feel my best, and I’m so excited to share the journey.”
