Danny Dwyer On Exploring His Film Career And The Meaning Behind New Single ‘Mortal Kombat’

A Spotify-keeper!

With over 5 Million streams on Spotify, Danny Dwyer is the music artist that we needed. Following his most recent single ‘Disbeliever’, Danny is back today with a single and accompanying music video for his new release ‘Mortal Kombat’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Danny about his favorite release so far, tips for getting through a breakup, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

D: “My dad has a small appliance store in North St. Louis and has worked my whole life selling washers and dryers to the good people of Florissant Missouri and neighboring counties. One day when I was very young he got an old soda machine from a scrap yard and set it up to sell cans of soda in front of his store. I thought nothing of it for the next 10 years until one day when I was in high school I was driving by with a friend who didn’t know anything about my dad and he points and says, “that machine there holds the coldest soda in Florissant” It was from that moment on that I knew what I wanted in life. I wanted to be the best at something, a cornerstone of quality. I wanted to provide people with the best music in the world in the same way that my dad provided Florissant Missouri with the coldest soda available. This has been my mission ever since.”

Tell us about your new single ‘Mortal Kombat’. What is its meaning?

D: “In the original “Mortal Kombat” game, when a character gets a good move on his opponent, a sound effect plays that says “Toasty!!” in a high-pitched voice. One day I was walking through the streets of East Hollywood and I heard the sounds of someone playing “Mortal Kombat” blaring through a second-story window. Cries of combat and violence echoed throughout the street but one thing stuck out to me and it was this “Toastie!!” sound effect. Something about those 2 notes sung operatically in celebration of a successful attack was all I needed to unlock the madness that is now the song “Mortal Kombat.” I look forward to what off-handed coincidence inspires the next single.”

What advice would you give to your fans that are going through a breakup?

D: “keep on keepin’ on and maybe look into a hobby like a diorama building or sailing. I have heard searching for lost jewelry with a metal detector on a beach can be quite lucrative.”

You have released amazing songs like ‘Chinatown Market’ and ‘Little Gnome’. What has
been your favorite song you have released so far?

D:My favorite song I have released so far is “Disbeliever.” I woke up on a cold morning in March with a melody ringing through my head. I then recalled a dream in which god himself came down from heaving and bestowed upon me the words “pissin me off” in that specific cadence. The ingredients for a smash hit were all there except for one slight problem, I was too much of a fool to see it at the time. I recorded it into my app “[Untitled]” where I store all my voice memos. I continued roaming the globe for the next month writing song after song in search of a hit that would change my life. On a cloudy Tuesday in June, deep into a writing session, it hit me… it was time to put that voice memo to use. The next thing I knew the rest of the song wrote itself and a smash was born. I live in constant fear that god will come for his publishing.”

You released an accompanying short film for your single ‘Asthma’. What was that experience
like and would you consider continuing to pursue a career in film?

D: Yes, I am making a documentary about small businesses that are still run entirely on paper. I would also like to spend a number of months tracking a certain species of bird I once read about once in my youth. Though I cannot recall the name of the species, I can recall the impact it had on me and I have been in search of it ever since. I am also more than willing to star in my own spinoff of Mike Rowe’s “Dirty Jobs” spinoff if someone is willing to fund it.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

D: “Probably to New York.”
