Devon Thompson Talks About Her New Fairytale Single ‘So Close’ And Teases Her Upcoming EP

Is there such thing as an artist being too talented?

Devon Thompson is quickly making a name for herself in the music industry because of her incredible songwriting and amazing voice. She recently released a new single titled ‘So Close’. And honestly? We think this is the best song she’s released so far!

We had the amazing honor of talking with Devon about the instrument she wants to learn next, Lana Del Rey, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

D: “I started writing music when I was 12 years old, and kept doing it for years to come. I think that I “felt” like I wanted a music career, but I didn’t genuinely want one until I was 16, when I formed a band and got to experience what it is like to be in one. Once I started releasing music, and playing lots of gigs, I think that was when I realized how amazing it was and knew there was nothing else I could do besides this.”

Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘So Close’.

D: “So Close is like a nightmarish fairytale. The song has a gripping and gruesome storyline, with soft ethereal notes to it, it’s the perfect balance of light and dark. The song is about a person who basically went mad and killed their lover just because they thought their headstone would look beautiful with flowers on it. “So Close” is, pretty much, a fictional story about a serial killer. I really leaned heavily on gothic poetry here, a lot like Type O Negative does. I wrote it in Nashville, which is why it almost has a gothic southern feel to it. “So Close” is a mysterious, heavy slow burn that is meant to make you really feel.”

We know this might be hard, but if you had to choose, what is your favorite single you have released so far and why?

D: “My favorite single is probably “Split Ends” because of all the opportunities it has brought me, first of all. It was placed in a Thrasher Magazine skateboard video and people still today say it’s their favorite song. I think it’s a crowd favorite overall for sure. The second reason is because I played every instrument on that song, and wrote every single part. That song is ME entirely. Knowing that the entire song was composed, produced, and performed by me, and it’s still a crowd favorite, makes me very proud of it.”

If you could collab with any music artist on a song, who would it be and why?

D: “I would collab with Lana Del Rey. We make completely different music, but I think she is one of the most special artists because of her mystery, her allure. Her music is, to me, the hottest, most ethereal, wonderful thing I have ever heard. Her vivid imagery that she depicts in her lyrics creates a whole universe around her music. That is something I am looking to achieve as well. But I value a lot of her songwriting techniques and think that we would make an amazing song. Especially since I think her voice would be amazing over a rock song.”

You are not a stranger to the stage! What do you enjoy the most about performing live?

D: “I have been on stage since I was 9 years old, so it’s been a while. The thing I enjoy most is the moment of bliss/ tranquility when I am locked in with my band and we know the material so well that I can forget that I am playing for an audience. This moment doesn’t happen often, but when It does, it’s one of the most amazing feelings.”

You are amazing on the guitar! Is there any other instrument that you want to learn how to play?

D: “I really want to learn how to play the Harp. It’s the most beautiful instrument to me. I would love to incorporate it in my music somehow.”

We hear that you have plenty more music in the works for 2024. Can you tease what fans can expect?

D: “I have another single coming out, as well as a new EP coming early next year. This EP is special to me because it really is a showcase of where I am at as an artist right now. It has its heavier tracks, as well as its lighter tracks to keep that light and dark balance going. But the EP is largely written by me, so I feel that it really depicts the kind of artist that I am at this moment.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

D: “I am on Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube, and all streaming platforms. I post often and engage with my audience, so that is for sure the best way to keep up with me! My handle is @devonthompsonmusic.”
