Singer-Songwriter Helena Mayer On Music Inspirations, Twitch, And “Bad At Parties”

This California artist is the new artist to know!

With nearly 5 Million streams on her music, Helena Mayer is quickly making her name in this industry. Since her debut in 2018, she has definitely proved her spot on our playlists!

We had the amazing opportunity to talk with Helena about her love of music, hobbies, and more!

Have you liked singing since childhood?

H:My entire life I have wanted to do something with music. I have always had a deep love for singing. I have vivid memories of singing whenever I got the chance whether it be by myself, in front of family, on a stage, etc etc. It was definitely a passion of mine from an early age.

When did you decide that you wanted to become a singer?

H: “I have wanted to be a singer for as long as I can remember. I didn’t know how that would manifest until I started working with my producer, Joshua Zegan, around 4 years ago. He helped me hone in my writing as well as see the trajectory of my music much more clearly. My passion has largely been in the lyrics I write and the story I am communicating through the song even more so than the melody, and using my project as a way to tell that story has been life-giving for me! Every time someone reaches out to tell me the impact one of my songs has had on them, it reminds me why I love what I do.

What do you like to do in your free time?

H:What I do in my free time largely depends on my mood. I really love hiking and being out in nature. I used to read a lot more in my free time, and I am finally getting back in to that. I just started reading the Harry Potter series for the first time, and it has been wonderful seeing what the hype is all about! I also find myself in short phases where I get excited about some kind of craft. Lately, it has been DIY furniture, but we will see how long that lasts. I also do love playing Call of Duty with friends, so my interests are very much varied!

Tell us about your brand new single “Bad At Parties”.

H:Bad At Parties was so fun to write!  I am very much an introvert, and so in a season where there has been drastically less interaction with people, my capacity to be a functioning adult in a large group setting has plummeted. I have seen a very similar trend with a lot of fellow introverts, and so this song is a way of accepting that piece of myself! The goal is to make this song an “anthem for introverts.”  Those of us who would rather stay home with a glass of wine and a bowl of Mac n’ Cheese don’t have to try and be something we aren’t.

Who is your biggest music inspiration?

H:There are so many musicians right now that inspire me! Specifically lyrically, I have been really drawn to Julia Michaels, Emily Weisband, and Jon Bellion. Each writer brings authenticity to their music but in such a creative way. I deeply respected the push towards authentic emotion and perspectives in songwriting, and I want to emulate that in a way that is uniquely my own.

What has been your reaction to receiving over 1 Million streams on your music?

H: It was surreal. I honestly had to do a double take the first time I saw “When It’s Over” gain momentum in general, so having it hit 1 million streams was insane. I try not to focus too much on the numbers because I want to make sure I don’t compromise my artistry for them. It is very encouraging to see that there are people who relate to my music and to the words I am writing!

What message would you want to give to your fans?

H: I would love to tell the people who have been supporting my project thus far that I am so so grateful for the ways they have come alongside me and loved on the songs I have been releasing. There’s definitely a lot of new and exciting projects to come, and I can’t wait to share what I have been up to. I would not be where I am without them!

Where can we follow your amazing goals?

H: I live stream on Twitch Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays under @helenamayermusic, and I have a phenomenal community there. I also post updates on instagram, and occasionally on TikTok as well under the same tag.
