Singer Jasmine Ortiz Talks Touring, Drake, And New Single “21”

At this point, you can not have not heard of this talent singer!

Jasmine Ortiz, at only 21, has released hits upon hits, with over 10 Million Streams on her previous music. When she’s not creating the song of the year, she is studying at the University of Miami. Definitely our Hannah Montanna!

We had the honor of talking with Jasmine on all things her career, her goals, and her biggest inspirations:

Q: When did you realize you wanted to start your own music career?

J: “I started out playing the piano at three years old after begging for lessons for 6 months – so it definitely always felt Ike a calling. I became even more passionate about it when I auditioned for the performing arts highschool where I spent four years as an instrumental major studying classical piano and jazz guitar while managing my own rock band after school. When I was looking into colleges, I made my final decision that music was the career I’d be going into and I’ve never looked back.”

Q: Tell us about your new single “21”.

J: “To me, “21” represents the nostalgia of all the times you have with your friends before turning 21, and how it feels like a big milestone of adulthood once you are. It’s a love letter to my friends and my school for the past three years I’ve spent at the University of Miami.

The video for “21” is very close to my heart, because it has all of my closest friends in it and really features the campus of my school, The University of Miami. I was inspired by Drake’s God’s Plan video to shoot on campus, and since I’m a student there it was a really fun process to show some parts of the school that you don’t see in God’s Plan. Drake even makes an appearance in the video!! That is especially important as Drake played a part of in my choosing the University of Miami. When I auditioned for the Frost school of music, it was a day after Drake had filmed Gods plan at my school. He is one of my absolute favorite artists on the planet and to see his stickers and Drake promo stuff all over the campus, everywhere I went, it felt like it was a sign, like the song says “Gods Plan”, like it was meant for me to attend this school. When I got accepted and into several other colleges around the country, other top music schools, I was very sure of my choice to attend UM, and indirectly thank Drake for his part in that decision.”

Q: You impressively play a total of five instruments so far. What is your favorite instrument?

J: “My favorite instrument is definitely the guitar, because I feel like I have the most flexibility genre and style wise. However, I started on piano so I really love that and I consider my songwriting and voice to be instruments of their own, and I really enjoy getting to see how I can utilize my instrumental skills in the productions I make in Logic.”

Q: How has studying music helped towards working on your own music?

J: “I would say that the relationships I’ve formed with my professors and peers have been invaluable in helping shape who I am as a musician and artist. I have gained an incredible understanding of the music industry through my music business classes as well as music theory, musicology, performance technique, production, engineering and songwriting coursework. Some of the biggest inspirations I’ve had to continue growing as an artist have been from the talented people around me.”

Q: What has been your reaction to seeing so much success from your music?

J: “It has felt really surreal for me- that so many people could resonate with something that I wrote. All of my songs feel incredibly personal and I used to get really shy when sharing them with anyone but family, so having this wide of an audience was a huge shock at first. Right now it just motivates me to keep doing what I love, work hard and stay consistent.

Q: “If you could feature on a song with any artist, who would it be and why?

J: “My favorite artists in the world are Drake, Post Malone and Amine, so I think my ideal collab would be a compilation of all our talents on a single track with four verses and a crazy hook. I really admire the artistry put out by all of them and the attention to detail in their lyrics and artistic branding.”

Q: What are your biggest goals for your career? Maybe a tour?”

J: “My biggest goal as an artist is to feel seen and heard. I want my music to make an impact and illicit certain emotions from the people who listen to it. Right now a running theme for my latest releases is nostalgia. In my last song Jaguar, I talk about how it feels to be young and reckless, feeling like you have no repercussions. In 21, we are reflecting back on that time and how fun it was- but now celebrating this next chapter and what it means for our lives and career in the “next 21”.  I would absolutely love if that includes a tour too 🙂 I’m also currently working towards releasing an EP in the next year and a huge goal of mine is to write and produce for other artists and get involved with sync and licensing in addition to my personal projects.”
