This singer is a fan-favorite!
With a relatable anthem “missin’ out” to an “(extra)ordinary” ep on the way, Julia Jade is spoiling us this year with songs we’re going to keep with us for the rest of our lives.
We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Julia about, her TV recs, and more!
Congratulations on your newest single “missin’ out”! Can you walk us through the meaning behind it and how the single came to be?
J: “Thank you! This song is about being afraid but not letting the fear stop you from living a meaningful and daring life. I moved to Nashville when I was 19, freshly graduated from the Berklee College of Music, and I didn’t know a single person there. All my friends were still in school together in Boston, and I could feel that gnawing feeling that I was not only missing out on my life I had there, but in my shyness and introversion, I was missing out on the potential life I could have in Nashville if I was just a little braver. This was one of the first songs I wrote when I got there, inspired not only by my circumstances but the cleverness and craftsmanship that country music taught me in Music City.”
If you had to choose, which of your releases thus far would you say best represents you as an artist?
J: “It’s a tie between this song and “(extra)ordinary.” “(extra)ordinary” is representative of the way I’ve always wanted my music to sound – soft, warm, indie vibes. I love the lyrics in that song and think they represent my philosophy on life, and how everything can be special, if you let it matter. The music video also pushes that one over the edge, as my artistry and personhood are heavily inspired by the TV shows that I watch
on repeat. The Office, in particular, taught me so much about love, friendship, and finding magic
in the mundane.
“missin’ out” hugely represents my artistry as well as it brings out another side – the folk inspiration from my time in Nashville, the quirky, twee lyrics inspired by early Ingrid Michaelson, and the message of pushing through anxiety to live fully and fiercely – one that I have been trying to live by. I think this song not only represents the art I want to make but also the kind of message, impact, and legacy I want to have as a person.”
You created the Slumber Party Sessions! What was your motivation behind getting this amazing event series together?
J: “I was working with one of my favorite producers, Shannon McArthur, and I was being, as usual, very opinionated about gigs I’ve played and the LA music scene at large. He said, “If you want to be a leader in the industry, why don’t you start an event?” And I never looked back! I have him to thank for seeing me in that light and believing in me. I added the theme of a Slumber Party for two reasons: 1) I was an RA in college and adored running themed events. I thought it was a nice personal twist to add since there are already so many showcases in LA. 2) I liked the idea of reclaiming the slumber party that a lot of us weren’t
invited to. Having an adult version where everyone is always invited, and it’s about sharing good
music and memories in your comfiest clothes. I think that’s really resonated.”
Has there been a session thus far that particularly points out to you as memorable and special?
J: “I think the 3-year anniversary show, one of our most recent shows, was particularly special. I was able to have returning artists who I really look up to, whose audiences have grown vastly since their first time playing. It meant so much to me that they still wanted to play my small show, and they spoke about it with such fondness and admiration. They didn’t have to be there; they wanted to be. I felt like the high school girl who was getting to be friends with the cool kids, but in a genuine way. The performances were extraordinary, and it was a really special night. I also have to shout out the Halloween Slumber Party Sessions: Alter Egos edition. All the artists play as a known musician… like you’ll have Yana playing as Hannah Montana. That one is always a particular brand of awesome.”
We know that you are quite the fangirl and pop culture girlie! What TV show would you recommend us to binge-watch this year?
J: “This is an impossible question! Just one?? I’m gonna say Superstore. If you liked The Office, you’ll definitely love it, and I think it doesn’t get enough credit. That said, a very off-brand favorite for me was Severance. That show became and continues to be my entire personality.”
Julia-Vision is a go for 2025! Can you tease what fans can expect from you this year?
J: “More television easter eggs, more music, more kind & dorky content, and a new merch rollout!”
