Artist Divine Lightbody Talks About Toronto, Jhene Aiko, And Her New Single ‘No Pressure’

Toronto has a new star!

Divine Lightbody is a joy to have in the music industry. She recently released a new single titled ‘No Pressure’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop!

We had the amazing honor of talking with Divine about her songwriting process, her favorite song she’s released so far, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

D: “I started off as a young musician. The african drum was my first instrument as my parents wanted me to learn more about my history as a black girl. I started writing songs when I was about 6 and knew I did not want to do anything else. I continued learning different instruments such as the guitar and piano, and by the time I knew it, I had enrolled myself as a voice major in both high school and college.”

Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘No Pressure’.

D: “No pressure is about wanting a no strings attached relationship. In the age of social media, there is a clear picture of what everyone thinks a relationship between two people that like each other should look like. However, if two people have established the kind of relationship they want, why is a no strings
attached arrangement bad? It’s a refreshing summer bop about having a good time with someone whose time you enjoy without having to worry about the heaviness of a relationship.”

What is your songwriting process usually like?

D: “I usually write my own chords and start a lot of the production before sending it off to a producer to finish. I wrote many of my songs alone in my bedroom. I start off with chords or some kind of beat element. This then allows me to create melodies and lyrics that align with the music on top. I typically like to write a verse, pre-chorus and chorus before recording it, so I have enough information to see if I truly love the track!”

What has been your personal favorite song you have released so far and why?

D: “My favorite song I’ve released is probably “I Do”. It was the very first song that I released and I wrote the main idea by myself when I was about 16. I feel like the song was beyond my age at the time and it was my first real experience bringing it to a producer and songwriters to turn into something I never knew could be possible. I personally love the chords. I was just starting to learn 4 note chords at the time, and I used them in the song. Later, I went on to study jazz music/harmony, so it just reminds me of where I came from and where I’m going.”

How would you personally describe the music scene in Toronto?

D: “The Toronto music scene is flourishing with talent. There are so many creatives making such great music in the city. I wish there were more platforms that shine light on the music scene in the city. I appreciate platforms that uplift local GTA talent and continue to create space for our music to be
heard.”

If you could collab on a song with any music artist, who would it be and why?

D: “There are so many amazing artists that I would love to collaborate with. “Flo” has been really inspiring lately, and I would love to collaborate with them. They’re sound and infectious harmonies bring us back to the R&B girl group days, which is their superpower. I would love to do a duet with Dylan Sinclair
or Lucky Daye. I love both of their music! I will always be a fan of Jhene Aiko. Her music makes me feel calm, while still maintaining a cool/baddie factor to it, which I would like to do more of myself. My ultimate collaboration would be with Tori Kelly. She has been a huge inspiration for me growing up, and It
would be wild to be on the same track as her.”

Can we expect more music from you in the future?

D: “More music is definitely on the way! I have been working with some very talented producers and can’t wait to share the music with the world.”
