This singer-songwriter is one to watch!
With thousands of streams on her music and a fanbase rising every day, artist Emmalee Rainbow is quickly becoming a Spotify must-have. Recently, she released her new record entitled ‘Origin’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Emmalee about growing up in a musical family, favorite songs off of her new record, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
E: “I never thought I would be a songwriter when I was younger. Music was always a huge driving force in my life—I was an obsessive listener and grew up in a musical family. But I actually didn’t pick up an instrument or begin writing my own music until I was around thirteen. It was then a gradual realization that writing, performing, and producing were something I was interested in doing forever.”
Tell us about your amazing new record ‘Origin’.
E: “‘Origin’ is an homage to my childhood, to my family, and to the whole of Los Angeles. It’s an amalgam of memories from my youth. For example, I frequented a casting office when I was growing up as a child actress that always had ten or twelve of these bright orange dog stools. I sort of wanted to have a mascot for this record and thought using the orange dog (which was designed by a Finnish artist named Eero Aarnio) was a great vehicle to represent my childhood in an abstract way. Really it’s just an inside joke. I think every commercial actor in LA will get it.”
If you had to choose, which is your favorite song off of the record, and why?
E: “I’m really proud of all these songs but I think my favorite is Playing Dead, mostly because of the trumpet. Bareboned it’s a really simple song but I think the instrumentation makes it bold. I’m a massive jazz fan and that’s the track where my inspiration shines through the most.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
E: “I used to write chord progressions on my guitar first, but now I mostly do lyrics first. It really depends on what I’m writing. For example I wrote Origin’s bass line first and the rest of the song over the course of two or three months, while Playing Dead was guitar first, and done within twenty minutes. I made a lot of edits in the studio, too.”
We have to talk about ‘Man vs. Child’. What was that experience like for you?
E: “I still honestly can’t believe it happened. It was my number one dream to be on a cooking show, to the point where I used to make my friends (who do NOT cook) compete with me in the kitchen when we were eleven. Looking back and seeing just how young I was, I’m really proud of how I handled everything. I’d love to compete again someday.”
If you had to pick, what is your go-to recipe?
E: “I make these vegan cauliflower al pastor tacos really often. My sister and brother-in-law really like them and ask me to make them sometimes. I bake a lot more often than I cook—I’m notorious for starting chocolate soufflés at 11:00 PM and eating both myself.”
You have had a successful acting career. Would you ever consider pursuing more acting projects in the future?
E: “Definitely! I’ve always wanted to direct a film, too. I’m actually currently writing a comedy feature with my brother. But my dream is to work with Martin Short. I’m obsessed with him.”
What are some of your biggest goals for your career in general?
E: “I’ve dreamt of hosting SNL since I was very young. Also, working with Martin Short.”
What is the best piece of advice you can give for young girls wanting to pursue music?
E: “Learn as many instruments as you can on your own so you don’t have to deal with guys in bands.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
E: “My Instagram is a start! @emmaleerainbow. Thanks!”
