Hazlett Talks About New Single ‘Slow Running’ And Teases His Upcoming EP ‘Goodbye To The Valley Low’

This definitely isn’t the first time you’ve heard of this artist.

With over 20 Million streams on just Spotify alone, Hazlett has quickly become a name to know in the music industry and someone to add to your favorite playlist.

We had the amazing honor of speaking with Hazlett about touring, Sweden, and more!

What is your writing process?

H: “I go through massive periods of writer’s block and then writers roll, so my process is just about staying intune with that feeling. I don’t know how to explain it but there’s this sudden flow when thinking about ideas and when your whole world starts revolving around collecting all those little ideas and piecing them together you know you’re ready to write. It doesn’t matter if I’m cooking, running or mid conversation, I’ll drop everything to get an idea written or recorded when I’m in that flow. Another big thing for me has become spaces. Trying to be creative in more spaces than just the studio. Whether that’s just a different corner in my apartment or the wooden floors of the Swedish cabin. Sometimes just being honest in a new space is all it takes.”

What inspired you to write your latest single “Slow Running”?

H: “It was one of the ones that really could only take shape in the cabin. Because it was off grid there was a lot of time to slow my head down and narrow in on some certain thoughts rather than being distracted. I got stuck thinking how we live in an age where we’re all so hell bent on protecting our own feelings that sometimes we forget who or what we drag into the mess along the way. We let things fade instead of solving, we let things go instead of working on them. Myself included, so it’s a little ode to that notion.”

Tell us more about your Goodbye to the Valley Low EP that is coming out on December 8th? What song on the EP has stuck out to you?

H: “I actually wrote it the weekend my last album came out. I was so stressed nobody was going to like my album so I ended up sitting in my window writing ideas down to take my mind off things. Next thing I knew I had a dozen or so songs around me. Packed a bag, too many guitars and went away to a cabin on the west coast of Sweden with my bud Freddy for the week to record them. As for which song stuck out, it all came together quite fast and working on multiple songs a day made it feel like a sonic blur, in a good way. A big thing for me is cohesive intention when putting records together. But I would say, while touring recently I’ve been gravitating towards playing ‘Stolen Seasons’ a lot.”

How would you describe the EP?

H: “I’ve kind of joked around that if my last album ‘Bloom Mountain’ was a party then this next installment ‘Goodbye To The Valley Low’ is the feeling everybody has left. You’re not sad, you’re not stoked but you’re just there with your thoughts, reminiscing strangely of something so recent. The place is a mess but it’s just you and your thoughts for a while, being all content and reflective.

Why did you want to open the EP with the song “Blame The Moon”?

H: “When I get back to writing after time away I’m always looking for that one song that is the sun that the rest of the songs can revolve around. Borrowing feelings and sounds from it and being detached but reminiscent of it. I like putting that out in the universe first. Last album it was ‘Please Don’t Be’ this time it was ‘Blame The Moon’. It feels natural as a first impression for each record.”

What was it like going on tour with the Wild Rivers and Josiah & The Bonnevilles?

H: “So good. The whole reason I got into music was to play songs live, albeit it often makes me terrified. Josiah I was so lucky to make friends with a while back and he is one heck of a sweet guy for bringing me along. And the Wild Rivers crew are real life darlings and an absolute machine the way they work. I’ve been pretty lucky to get out with some bands and see a bunch of people this year and hopefully that doesn’t stop next year.”

If someone is visiting Sweden and is looking for something to do, what would you recommend?

H: “I’d recommend fika at Drop Coffee (tell them Hazlett sent you). Vintage shopping at Broadway & Sons. And a stroll through Fotografiska the photography museum. Also Gamla Stan (Old Town) is good for a whimsical stroll.
