A music artist we know you’re going to love!
From acting to singing, Kayla DiVenere excels at everything that she puts her mind to. And that is evident with her brand new bop ‘Date Myself’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Kayla about her songwriting process, ‘Love, Victor’, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
K: “I first started making music when I was 13. I overheard my brother writing a song in his room (I’m from a very musical family) and for some reason it hadn’t occurred to me until that moment that writing music is not only for the Taylor Swifts and Katy Perrys of the world — I could write songs too, anybody can write songs! Music belongs to everybody, and that’s a beautiful realization. After that moment, my brother and I would soon embark on our “sibling battle of songs”, where we would see who could write the best song every week. It really helped with my songwriting skills! I thought about how much music helped me growing up, and how beautiful it would be if I could participate in the free therapy that music is to others.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘Date Myself’.
K: “I blurted out “I kinda wanna date myself” while ranting to my mom about all the horrible dates I’ve been on. I knew from the moment I said it out loud that it could be turned into an anthem for everyone going through the endless, treacherous dating cycle of constantly being let down. Writing “Date Myself” reminded me of how beautiful it is to spend time by yourself and how important it is to be comfortable owning your self love and high standards. Being able to hear it back after writing it and to scream it at the top of my lungs has comforted me more than any guy has, and I hope it can comfort people too in any way they can relate to it.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
K: “I have a note on my phone specifically designed to be used anytime I think of a song idea. I usually get most of my song concepts from observing myself and the world around me. If I hear a conversation next to me in line at a coffee shop that sparks inspiration, I’ll add it to my list of concepts. If I hear a line from a TV show/movie that really resonates with me, having a conversation with my friends, journaling, or moments in time I experience. I really just channel the external world around me along with my internal emotions. After I have my concept, I try to find chords that make sense for the idea, and then I basically mentally black out until I write the last word of the song!!”
If you had to choose, what has been your favorite song you have released so far and why?
K: “That’s a really tough question… I love my “Justin Bieber” song because of how the die-hard Beliebers embraced it, but I’m also so in love with “Jumping the Gun” since it’s the first of many singles to be released of my new project that feels 100% authentic and relatable to me.”
If you were able to collab on a single with any music artist, who would it be?
K: “It would be a dream to collaborate with Dominic Fike! I’m obsessed with his music and who he is as a person.”
We’ve loved seeing you on TV! Are you planning on continuing your acting career in the future?
K: “Aw, thank you!!! I am 1000% going to continue my acting career. Acting, music, and any creative space in general just feels like where I belong the most.”
What has been your favorite acting experience so far and why?
K: “My favorite acting experience has been on set for Love, Victor on Hulu. The cast and crew were so incredibly welcoming, and shooting a party scene late at night crafted for the best deep conversations and grilled cheese at 3AM. Basically a sleepover with good food and the best people.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
K: “I’m the most active on Instagram and TikTok @kayladivenere, and of course my Spotify :)! Would love for anyone to come along on the journey <3.”
