An indie-pop artist you need to know!
Singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne deserves to be one of your favorite artists. Yesterday, she released a new single titled ‘In The Rain’. And in our opinion, it is her best yet!
We had the amazing honor of talking with Edie about her songwriting process, dream collabs, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
E: “There are a few key moments in my childhood that brought me to this point. An important figure in my musical journey is my Abuela who was a Nicaraguan opera singer. She sang to me every moment we were together. A lot of Eydie Gorme and Los Ponchos who I am named after. When I was very very young, I started at YADA in LA – Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts and got a good education in musical theater there from the start – we did Chorus Line, Xanadu, Hairspray, Cats – maybe over 20 shows. I more recently went to see our family friend Joy Huerta in concert at the Wiltern Theater and seeing her angelical presence on stage and hearing her magical voice live was inspiring. Before the pandemic, when I was around 10 years old, producer Anna Bulbrook organized a music festival called Gxrlschool at what was once the Bootleg
Theater. Kristin Kontrol invited a group of kids to perform with her and I was one of them. Iconic artists like Karen O joined us on stage and it was a dream come true. I sang “Fade Into You” and was sold from that moment forward.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘In the Rain.’
E: “I wrote the song on a stormy LA night after an argument with a loved one. I was trying to put the words and the pain on the page, in the music, as a way not to absorb what was said and detach from the hurt, with the hope it could help to heal down the road.“
What is your songwriting process usually like?
E: “I write ideas or lyrics in journals all through the day. At school, at dinner, everywhere. I will write on the guitar or on the keyboard. I started taking songwriting classes during quarantine/pandemic to help complement guitar and singing classes I was taking and it gave structure to the process. I send the songs to my producers Cormac Liotta and Nicky Swedin and they translate it live in the context of the studio. We collaborate and play from there. We have the best time in the studio. Our cadence has been weekly
sessions this summer in the studio and trying to release a single per month.”
You are only 14 years old (So impressive)! Where do you see your career in 10 years?
E: “Acting, singing, directing. I want to be able to build an audience where I can use art to have an impact on activism. And I would love to be able to live in-between the worlds of music, film, and fashion.”
If you could collab with any music artist, who would it be and why?
E: “Fiona Apple. She is one of my inspirations. Phoebe Bridgers is another. There are so many phenomenal female singer-songwriters that I look up to and could learn so much from.”
What advice can you give to young girls who want to pursue a career in music?
E: “I always hear you are so young, there is no rush. You have so much time. You should just be a kid. But why wait – wait for what? We are here with feelings, stories, and questions right now and we may be small but I think contributing to cultural conversations early on can feel risky but there can be a lot of potential in sharing ideas, making gestures like creating a song and putting it out in the world.”
Tell us more about you being an advocate for the Vascular Birthmark Foundation?
E: “As an ambassador of the Vascular Birthmark Foundation, I am able to learn about promoting both social and medical awareness. I was born with a rare vascular birthmark. There is a vast local, national, and international community of individuals and families touched by vascular anomalies. There is so much need for education and community. I was fortunate that when I was around 3 years old my mother found VBF and got deeply involved. She was able to find doctors, specialists who are invested in my care and are the thought leaders in their industry. They save lives. They have changed my life. I am forever grateful. I hope to perform my single “Stain” for their 30th anniversary.”
