Carmel Amit Talks About Meryl Streep And New Role In ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening’

Carmel is a star in the making!

It is always a delight to see Carmel Amit on our TV screens, or in the movie theatre. She recently starred in the hilarious movie ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening’, which currently has an A-rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Carmel about the importance of on-screen diversity, advice for aspiring actresses, and more!

What inspired you to start your career as an actress?

C: “To be an actress is all I’ve ever wanted to be. From the time I was 6 years old. But it wasn’t until I was in my early 20’s that a fond acquaintance said to me, “if you want to take this seriously you have to study in New York”. Two weeks later I was in NY auditioning for theatre schools. It was during my training that I truly fell in love with acting and discovered the depth of the craft, the history, the passion. I continue to train today. And I teach as well. Passing on concepts about acting I am passionate about keeps me inspired every day.”

What was your favorite part about working on ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening?

C: “The creative process felt collaborative. Working alongside such seasoned comedians who were able to re-write jokes on the fly and having the writer ask my opinion about certain scenes was exciting. Josh Duhamel is a generous and fun director. He has a way of creating a really positive vibe on set and making everyone feel like an important part of the project. Also, playing Phoenix has been my favorite acting experience to date. She is larger than life, very kooky and was a joy to embody.”

Do you feel like you relate to your character ‘Phoenix’ at all?

C: “I relate to Phoenix’s competitive edge. I can get very competitive, especially when I am around men. It’s the tomboy in me. Phoenix is an entrepreneur, a savvy business woman. She marches to the beat of her own drum, she’s a leader, and influencer, a lover of equality… she has lots and lots and lots of money and she plays hard with it. I can’t say I relate to all of that. But she is one fun character to play!”

If you could describe ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening’ in three words, what would they be?

C: “Friendship, Competition, Absurdism.”

Who would be your dream actress to collaborate with?

C: “Meryl Streep. Hands down. I saw her live in Mother Courage in NY at Shakespeare in the Park one year. She was already a mature woman. Her physical agility was breathtaking. I recall it started to rain really hard and the show was going to get stopped. Meryl threw her arms at the sky, mock cursing it… and pushed forward for the show to continue. I love her work.”

You are Israeli! How important do you think diversity is in the entertainment industry?

C: “There are so many stories to tell with so many perspectives and points of view. Things are moving in the right direction in our industry. I cherish the opportunities when I get to play an Israeli or Jewish character. I welcome more of that. But I’m an actor and part of the joy and magic of the work is getting to step outside of myself and playing different people.”

What is one of your best tips for aspiring young actresses?

C: Here’s my very practical list:
Train!!! Train!!! Train!!!
Create opportunities for yourself to perform live.
Learn different skills. i.e. singing, dancing, music, sports…
Watch lots of movies.
Learn about other actor’s journeys
Get an agent.
And if you really really love it. Don’t give up. It can be a long, windy and unexpected road.
