Director Cecilia Choi Talks About New Series ‘Kombucha Cure’ And Teases Storyline For Season 2

One of the showrunners behind an amazing new show!

Writer Cecilia Choi is a person in the industry you need to know. Recently, she became the driving-force behind the star-studded TV show ‘Kombucha Cure’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Cecilia about Quentin Tarantino, advice for fellow filmmakers, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?

C: “I believe that everyone has a creative energy.  We can nurture that craft that resonates best with ourselves. Personally, I grew up watching films which featured fantastic stories but they did not showcase my heritage and culture. Maybe unconsciously, I downplayed the worth and the importance of what I could bring to the table. Initially, I wanted to help struggling creatives in the AAPI community so that their voices can be amplified. Then, I realized that I wanted to do more than support them because I also had a unique voice and a story to tell.”

Tell us more about your amazing new series ‘Kombucha Cure’.

C: “Kombucha Cure is a dark comedy about a medical doctor working for a large health insurance company, who in her own viewpoint was trying to help curb the high cost of rising healthcare and decreased quality of life. She begins to see that her innovative plans were actually impacting communities, especially those that are in the rural area, in a negative way. Particularly, a small town of Verdigris Lake, crushed by financial ruin, finds a creative yet dangerous way to deal with healthcare.”

‘Kombucha Cure’s cast is completely star-studded! What was the process for casting the series?

C: “It was very important that we had stars, who were not only super-talented actors from different backgrounds, but also had a genuine drive to fight for social justice. We wanted to use this dark comedy to foster conversation that examines what is quality healthcare.”

For this project you are a writer, producer, and director! Which of these do you enjoy doing the most, if you had to choose?

C: “If I had to choose, directing probably gives me the most joy because I spend the whole day playing with other creatives, discussing, arguing, and collaborating on the essence and the message of the story.”

Are there any filmmakers who inspire you?

C: “Quentin Tarantino films are messy and are infested with flawed, unconventional characters.  But, you remember them long after the film ends because they trigger something that’s real in your own life experiences, in a subconscious state perhaps. Also, he is meticulous about the whole film experience including the cinematography, editing, music, and sound design. I love that about him.”

What advice would you give to fans of yours who want to pursue a career in filmmaking?

C: “Never wait for that perfect script or the perfect project. Keep making stuff. Learn the craft and become obsessed with it. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, inspire you, teach you, and fight with you. They will help distill that story that you want to tell and get rid of the non-essential fluff that is ego-protective. Get out of your own circle of safety. Explore other types of culture and belief systems and listen to their stories.”

We hear that a season two is confirmed! Can you tease what fans can expect from the second season?

C: “We continue to follow the Kombucha Cure team as they flounder through trying to help other communities that have been left behind by the bigger healthcare systems. The stakes are higher as their success in helping these smaller communities gains national attention.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

C: “Kombucha Cure is on Popstar! TV currently. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram.”
