Actress Niccy Lin Talks About Her Upcoming Movie Role And ‘Sophie Soo’ In Netflix’s ‘You’

Netflix just found its next star!

From Hulu’s ‘The Great’ to her role in the movie ‘Official Secrets’, Niccy Lin steals the show in everything she’s in! And now, she’s about to star in season four of the hit Netflix show ‘You’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Niccy about her new role, why she didn’t set New Year’s Resolutions for this year, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?

N: “You know what, I love the memory of knowing when it hit that acting was just the best feeling in the world. I was in my final year of GCSE’s and the school play was going to be the screenplay of Pride & Prejudice. Growing up I loved Keira knightley, even more than that I loved pride and prejudice. I’m a die hard romantic, my head is sandwiched firmly in the clouds and anything associated with romance or murder mysteries is often where you’ll find me haha. I decided to go for the school play to be a part of the chorus (just so I could be involved in any capacity). I asked if I could audition for the role of Mr.Collins and the drama teacher mr. Harris said no, but try the script for the role of Elizabeth Bennett. Having watched the film 200 times I knew the scene by heart and adrenaline kicked in, and I just went ham on it…it was a scene where Lizzie essentially tells Mr. Darcy to go stuff himself and I fully lost myself in it. He then asked me to try the script for the role of mrs. Bennett. Afterwards, he asked me why I wasn’t studying drama and I just genuinely was like….I can’t act. He said I expect to see you next year for A Level drama. And, he did. Mr. Harris is really the reason I continued to pursue it.”

Were you a fan of Netflix’s ‘You’ before you were casted in this season?

N: “I had funnily enough not watched the series before. At the beginning of the audition process they didn’t divulge what project it was. I’ve always believed that works better for me. If you have no idea what you’re going for you roll with what you’re given and simply relish the opportunity to even audition. It wasn’t until about the 3rd or 4th round of self tapes they told me it’s for YOU and I was like right, time to binge watch everything. I ploughed through that series like nobody’s business and unwittingly became heavily invested hahaha this season is very different from the last 3 and I love that about it. The perspective the writers have taken is enough to get you foaming at the mouth with anticipation. I finished reading scripts and would honestly just be sat there eyes bulging, and jaw swinging so low it would collect floor dust.”

Do you think you have anything in common with your character ‘Sophie Soo’?

N: “Sophie and I are two vastly different human beings I cannot lie. Sophie is someone who reminds me of a hybrid between a fox and a snake. Cunning, quick, her exterior often beautifully decorated to lure people in or even (rather nastily) to remind people of how little they have in comparison. Her shallow exterior differs to the fact that internally she’s intelligent, has a bite to her and is calculating. I’m personally more like a dog, very open, and empathetic by nature. My mum taught me to live life with kindness, to work hard, to have perspective and the mentality that life should be lived in bringing others happiness, I stand by that. I can be firm but that usually takes a lot of pushing and prodding in the wrong direction before any kind of explosion goes off.

The only thing I believe we have in common is privilege, but different ends of the spectrum in relation to it. Sophie is someone who uses her privilege to benefit herself and those she deems worthy. I’d like to hope I’m the kind of person who would use my privilege to benefit others first. I grew up very lucky with many opportunities. But, I have worked my arse off, I hustle at multiple jobs and will continue to not take my luck for granted.”

What was it like behind the scenes of the show? Did you get along with your co-stars?

N: “Behind the scenes was nothing short of bloody epic. I was scared as all hell knowing I would be acting alongside some of America and Britain’s finest. I had watched many of these actors in series and films and even plays. But, I made friends for life with my Co-stars and crew alike. And despite having finished filming I still see and am in contact with them. Best believe every big event is always hosted at Eve Austin’s house and we all turn up for each other.”

You and your character are featured in every poster of Season 4! What has been your reaction to this recognition?

N: “I think I tend to play things down a lot, I’m still very much of the hope for the best but prepare for the worst mindset haha. I don’t mean to be cynical but, I’m very aware of being a small fish in this industry, so seeing my face on the posters hasn’t made me being a part of the series real yet. I’d actually reposted the posters to my other account which I use for my art/ tattooing and I’d had two of my customers think that I was a YOU fanatic hahaha they didn’t realise it was me on the poster, just thought I was a die hard fan of the series. Once I told them oh no was just me trying to promote the new series, obviously rather unsuccessfully as people were just getting the impression I’m obsessed with a serial killer. Amazed they still showed up for their appointments.”

What are some of your New Year’s resolutions for this year?

N: “I can’t lie I actually didn’t make a resolution this year. My thought process started with the fact I’m a fan of even numbers, because when the numbers are odd I always feel like something gets left out. 2023 felt like bad number, and I believed my odds were not looking great so I decided to pre-emptively not promise to do things that could go terribly wrong (you can tell I’ve weighed out all my potential options here). Also not to get into zodiacs but this Chinese New Year of the rabbit told me that unfortunately, those born in the year of the dog would be rather unlucky this year hahaha. So I’m honestly just trying to stay chirpy, keep hustling, and not get my mouth into something my ass can’t handle! I will however be completing a bucket list dream of mine this year and will be popping out a plane like a champagne cork at 1500 feet. So I’m ticking things off of one form of list!”

You also star in the film ‘Murder Ballads’, which is expected to be released this year. Can you tell us more about the upcoming project?

N: “During COVID I signed on to do an independent feature film which ended up being Murder Ballads. It is one of the funniest projects I’ve ever had the pleasure to be a part of. Through the audition process the script reminded me of dark comedy at its finest; a kind of Edgar Wright, ‘Hot Fuzz’ slow build into total unrelenting, unsuspecting chaos based around rock n roll and the music industry. Mitch and Neil the writers and directors were just fantastic and “too much” was rarely too much for them. They gave me a lot of freedom to just have fun and play which gave me confidence to make decisions and choices about my character with them. I got to play a rather uptight, straight-laced journalist type, which is always fun. I love characters that pull pinched expressions, have a bit of a know it all air about them while still being moderately humble. They’re always the ones that get absolutely rifled in one way or another in comedies. Hopefully, the incident you see me get into makes you laugh. If it doesn’t, honestly I’ll take a white lie haha.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

N: “I’m technologically moronic. I have tiktok and Twitter…absolutely no idea how to use them properly which leaves me basically with Instagram. I find the transitions people can edit in tiktok fascinating. If anyone can teach me wtf is going on so I can try not appear like a 60 year old in a 28 year olds body id appreciate it. My insta account @niccy.lin which is my personal and professional acting life mingled into one (should probably separate them but I probably won’t). So I guess if you are interested in looking me up, that’s probably the closest to a visual background check on me as you’ll get.”
