Music Artist Ahmen Talks About His New Single ‘Love Letter’ And His Non-Profit ‘Our Turn’

Making an impact!

Motivational speaker and music artist Ahmen is sharing amazing messages through speeches and music. And now, he’s back with a new single ‘Love Letter’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Ahmen about ‘The Troublemakers’, Actualization, and more!

What first inspired you to name your fan base ‘The Troublemakers’?

A: “Some of my earliest memories are moments of being labeled as a Troublemaker, for simply diverting from the rules of teachers or adult authority figures. For the longest time, I thought I was the problem. As I grew older, I learned that we live in a status quo that forces us into paths that aren’t healthy, fulfilling, or just. Troublemakers are the ones who raise their voices and take action against that status quo, and I make music with and for the people who are hungry for transformation, both individually and collectively.”

Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘Love Letter’, featuring Anjelica Sky and Jeremy Paxton. What is its meaning?

A: “As warriors for individual wellbeing and social justice, we are carrying a torch that was lit by legends before us, people who had to sacrifice and innovate relentlessly. They gave us a platform to not only advocate for change, but to do it on our terms – with purpose and swag. “LOVE LETTER” captures that spirit of legacy, and it’s channeled through a hip-hop, r&b, and rock fusion that hits from the streets to the dance floor!”

What inspired you to create your non-profit ‘Our Turn’?

A: “I had the honor of succeeding the founder in 2019, which was nearly a decade after Our Turn’s founding. This is a full circle leadership role for me; it’s a chance to fuse my passion for disrupting the status quo with a fervent belief in the power of young people to lead the way. The U.S. education system has been broken for generations, partially because it has silenced the voices of young people of color. At Our Turn, we are rewiring the system by elevating the stories and changemaking ability of youth to design an equity- and student-centered education.”

What are some of your New Year’s resolutions for 2023?

A: “This year is about actualization. I spent 2022 laying the groundwork; writing and creating my upcoming album, building an incredible team at Our Turn, and exploring pathways for elevating my own voice in the social impact and executive leadership arenas. This year, we’re bringing it all to life! A storm is coming.”

What advice can you give to our readers who are inspired by you and want to make an impact?

A: “Lean into disruption, and find your allies. Even if you work at a corporation, you will find someone else who feels a similar way. When I worked at P&G early in my career, I saw that we were struggling to hire and retain people of color. I found an ally on the leadership team who helped me to run an analysis and draft a memo that detailed the situation and outlined recommendations, and many of those recommendations were implemented. With allies, you can be smarter and supported when taking those steps for impact.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

A: “Find me on social! I’m on IG at @iam_ahmen and Twitter at @iamahmen.”
