Ella Proberts Talks About Women’s Rights, Florence Pugh, And Recent Disney Debut Role

Such an amazing actress!

From her theatre career to her appearance in ‘Mako Mermaids’, Ella Proberts is quickly becoming one to know. She recently starred in the Disney film ‘The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Ella about her organization, being in college, and more!

What made you want to start acting?

E: “I started acting in primary school at a community hall where a lot of the kids from my school went. It was a place where we were encouraged to have fun and play dress ups and I honestly just couldn’t believe that. So, since I was about 6, acting has always been an important part of my life.”

You have a passion for gender equality and women’s rights. Is there someone that inspired that passion?

E: “I went to an all-girls school, and they put quite a heavy focus on social justice there. I was surrounded by so many girls who were always achieving really incredible things, but after I left school, I found there wasn’t so much encouragement and support for these kinds of girls. That’s how I found Girl Up, which is founded by the United Nations Foundation to promote advocacy, leadership, and gender equality. It’s a place where you’re surrounded by people who are always trying to do what they can to help other people, which is incredibly inspiring.”

Who is your dream co-star and what would you star in?

E:Florence Pugh! If I were acting alongside her, I honestly don’t think I would really care what the movie is (but ideally a Greta Gerwig film if I get to choose).”

Do you want to continue acting after college?

E:Yes of course! Acting is my absolute passion. I think it will always be part of my life, whether I am getting work or not.”

What was your favorite part about acting in The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay as ‘Daniela’?

E: “I would say being on such an upbeat set. Everyone was always ready to work and throw ideas around which Christine, our director, really supported and the cast were all so hilarious on and off set. Although it was a quick shoot (3 weeks long!), it’s something I’ll never forget.”

Would you say you have any similarities to your character ‘Daniela’?

E: “Daniela is an interesting one, you might say she starts off as a bit of an antagonist. But by playing her, I got to know her a bit better and I think she was just torn in a lot of different directions – what does she want? What does she need to do to fit in? What does her dad want from her?  Or her friends, Jennifer, and Quinn? All on top of your classic societal expectations and pressures as well. What she needed to learn was to filter through all of that and stay true to her and listen to the people she loves and trusts.

I think that story is sort of similar with me in choosing acting. I told myself a narrative that it wasn’t possible to act and study at university at the same time and let my insecurities get the better of me. But once I realized that to act is what I want, and listened to the people who support that, things started to change, slowly but surely.”

What’s your next career goal?

E:My next career goal is to keep acting and working on the craft in every way possible. I have some things in the works where I’m taking up some behind the scenes roles, which I’m really excited to sink my teeth into. So far, it’s helped me to understand and appreciate film even more.”

Where can we follow your journey?

E: You can keep up to date with what I’m doing over on my Instagram page @ellaproberts :)”
