Maddisun On Performing Live, Dolly Parton, And New Album ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’

This Canadian artist is truly incredible!

Fans of singer-songwriter Maddisun became even happier last week when her second full album ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’ was released. And if you want to join the artist in celebrating, she is currently on album-name tour for September and October.

We had the amazing opportunity of talking with Maddisun about the growing attention to her music, favorite song off of the album, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

M: “I was introduced to music from a very early age. I come from a super musical family (and one that is also very supportive of my drama queen musical dreams – hehe).

I don’t think there was any one moment where I decided I wanted to pursue the career in music, I just always knew. My dad and aunts would play guitar around the campfire every chance they got. I grew up really rurally, like in the country… so this started my passion for organic/grassroots music. I definitely knew I wanted to pursue music after I saw Taylor Swift too!”

Tell us about your amazing sophomore album ‘Home Is Where Music Is’.

M: “I have been working on this album, and concept for quite some time now! The album is really about the last few years of navigating, learning so much about myself, and really “coming home” with my music. Coming into myself. I have experienced a lot of growth with this album, a lot of maturing has happened in my personal and artistic life. However, I have stayed grounded, and this album is so true to my roots, and my “home.”

I wrote the album mostly in Ireland (I travelled back to where I used to live) and was recorded in Los Angeles with production team PSYSOUND (Chloe Chaidez/Nick Noto). So the theme of home is where the music is, that’s really felt in this album as I was in so many places piecing in together, but I always felt home when I connected with the music.”

We know it’s hard, but out of the 10-tracks which is your favorite and why?

M: This kind of changes day to day, depending on my mood – hehe. Right now, I’m going to say my favourite track is “On The Outside”.

This song I wrote when I was on my retreat in Ireland… After having one of those nights where you feel like you’re in a movie. I remember writing the song at like 7:00am after I got in from this incredible party where I danced on a boat all night. It holds a lot of special bits of my trip and how I was feeling in the moment about life. The song is produced really well (kudos Nick Noto and PSYSOUND) and I just love the way it makes me feel when I play it.”

What is your songwriting process usually like?

M: When I am writing a song, it’s always the lyrics first. Sometimes the lyrics and melody are created simultaneously. The theme of my songwriting is either something I’m going through personally, and want to rise above, and share with my audience… or it’s straight up some experience I am storytelling about! After the lyrics come.. I will start tinkering with the music. It can be in many different ways… guitar, piano, synth, creating some kind of production on my computer. I really connect with the lyrical/melody side of songwriting the most.”

We love seeing you perform. What is your favorite aspect of performing your music live?

M:Definitely getting to really become whoever I want, and completely let go. When you’re on stage, pretty much anything goes. You can be wild, totally expressive and connected to the music. I really love dancing, and moving to the music, so when I get to play with a full band, I really tap into that. I also love creating the live soundscapes with the music, trying to come up with something maybe a little different than the album, just getting experimental.”

If you could collab on a single with any artist, who would it be and why?

M: “Dolly Parton, hands down! She is so incredible and I’m very inspired by her. She writes in a very positive way, and if you watch interviews from her younger days, she never let anything get in her way, and always powered through as the strong female songwriter she is. I have watched her documentary probably a hundred times at this point, and I think we could make some really great music together. I am definitely inspired by old school country music.”

What has been your reaction to receiving well over 200K+ streams on your music?

M: It was sooo exciting for my first album to get so many streams! It felt very reaffirming. “Don’t Say No” hit 50k in the first 2 months of being released, and that has been pretty surreal.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

M: I post most of my updated content/journey on my Instagram, so please give me a follow there @maddisunmusic – and for all new music, of course check out the Spotify @ Maddisun.”
