Kennedy Garcia is living proof that having Down Syndrome or having a disability of any kind does not mean you can’t follow your dreams. From modeling, to public-speaking, to acting, this triple-threat is a name to know in this industry.
We had the absolute honor of talking with Kennedy on advice for others with a disability, working with popular people in the industry, and more!
You were diagnosed with Down syndrome hours after you were born and at 3 years old you battled Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. What was it like for you to grow up with some disabilities?
K: “Sometimes it’s hard because people don’t give me a chance because I have Down syndrome or they can be mean to me but I just keep working hard to be kind and show the world I can do anything. Fighting cancer was very hard. I hope I never have to do that again. “
You were the first model with Down syndrome by American Girl. How do you feel about becoming the first model with Down syndrome to work for the iconic brand?
K: “I loved working with American Girl. It was my first big job and one of my favorite brands. I got to meet a lot of great people and it was the beginning of a fun career for me!”
Working with American Girl led to a campaign with Kenzie Ziegler for Justice as well as campaigns for Claire’s, Disney, and many more. What was it like for you to work with Kenzie?
K: “I LOVED meeting and working with Kenzie. I am a dancer too so that was extra special for me. That was probably one of my most favorite jobs.”
You are playing a lead role in the upcoming movie The Son. Can you tell us more about the movie about your character?
K: “My character’s name is Sara and she is kind of like me – sweet and sassy and doesn’t let anyone boss her around. She’s got a big heart and loves her family and friends.”
You have spoken at the Adam Morgan Foundation and at over 100 middle schools, high schools, and colleges nationwide talking candidly about your journey with Down syndrome as well as how to be friends with people with disabilities. What do you hope people take away from your story?
K: “That people with Down syndrome and other disabilities are just like you. We can lead full and productive lives and make awesome friends! Not sure how to talk to someone with Down syndrome? Just go over and say hello! It could be the start of a beautiful friendship!”
What is some advice for people that are dealing with disabilities that are trying to fit in and make a difference?
K: “I always try to connect in meaningful ways, through music and tv shows and I try to volunteer with organizations and meet people that way. It’s been a great way to give back and make friends at the same time.”
You give back to your community by working with several nonprofits supporting both Down syndrome and childhood cancer. What do you hope people take away from your work with these organizations?
K: “I guess just to see that everyone can help in some small way and have fun doing it! I love helping wherever I can, especially to organizations who have helped me along the way.”
You have caught the attention of numerous stars in the industry including being featured on Anthony Padilla’s hit YouTube show I Spent a Day With. How do you feel about getting recognized for your work in the industry?
K: “It’s really awesome! I love to meet all these amazing people who are doing awesome things and hopefully helping others who are coming up behind me. We are all in this together.”
