This rising independent is quickly becoming a star!
With chart-topping hits, over a Million streams, and Netflix coverage, singer Jason Maxwell is making his way into the limelight. Now, he’s back with his brand new single ‘For Now’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Jason on the Toronto and Nashville music scenes, ‘School of Rock’ and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
J: “Music has always been an integral part of my life but my passion to pursue a professional
career in the industry was definitely influenced by the movie “School of Rock”. Immediately after
watching the movie I wanted to play the drums and guitar and be a “rockstar” – my parents
weren’t too thrilled with the idea of hearing drums banging and crashing throughout the house
so we settled on guitar. I first picked up a guitar when I was 12 years old but I didn’t really take a
deep dive into the music world until my final year of university. I joined a local band to play
rhythm guitar and sing background harmony – after a year or so I had the realization that I
wanted to be the lead creative sharing my own artistry with the world and here we are today!”
Tell us about your amazing new single ‘For Now’.
J: “The song was inspired by a past relationship that ultimately failed – very much a case of ‘right
girl, wrong time’. A year or so after our relationship ended, I noticed she had moved on to
someone new and my initial reaction was to immediately question whether her new relationship
was as serious or meaningful as her previous relationship with myself. Overall the song is a
genuinely loving, somewhat bittersweet/toxic but straight from the heart message to my ex-
girlfriend telling her that she can do better than who she replaced me with. It’s genuinely loving
in the sense that I truly want what’s best for her – it’s somewhat bittersweet/toxic in the sense
that I’m suggesting we should rekindle our relationship because I feel that what we shared in the
past is greater than the love she now shares with her new partner.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
J: “It definitely varies in the sense that there’s no strictly regimented process or approach.
Sometimes I’ll have an idea or a specific lyrical phrase I want to build the song around – other
times I’ll have writer’s block content-wise and instead I’ll work out a vocal or instrumental lead
melody to build the track feel and groove around. For me there’s no such thing as words-first
music-second or vice-versa – I find I write my best songs when I find the type of sonic energy
that genuinely and passionately resonates. Once I find that space, I always try to build the entire
song around that core foundational feeling that ultimately gives the song its life.
How different do you think the music scene is from your hometown of Toronto to Nashville?
J: “From a genre standpoint I’d say the Toronto music scene is heavily focused on Pop, Rap, Hip-
Hop and R&B whereas Nashville is home to every genre under the sun despite being primarily
known for Country music. There’s a small Country music scene in Toronto but it’s definitely
starting to expand at an increasing rate in the surrounding GTA communities. While Toronto is
certainly the premier live music hub in Canada, it pales in comparison to Nashville’s live music
scene that’s second to none.”
What has been your reaction to receiving well over 1 Million streams on your music?
J: “Shocked, humbled and grateful to be honest. I can still remember the feeling the day I sold out
my first batch of CD’s half a decade ago – I can still remember passing my first 1,000 streams
on Spotify several years ago. When I started I never imagined reaching more than a couple
hundred, maybe a couple thousand people – 1.5 million is quite a far stretch from my initial
expectations. It’s a surreal statistic to try and visualize or envision but it’s incredibly humbling to
the core – I don’t have the words to express how beyond grateful I am for the opportunity to be
heard.”
Can we expect more music from you in the future?
J: “Plenty more songs on the way! I’m planning to release an album this summer and I’m already
back in the studio recording for the next project.”
What are some of your biggest career goals? Maybe a tour in the future?
J: “I have an endless list of objectives and target benchmarks but my number one career goal is to
maintain leverage and control of my catalogue and my artistry.”
