Singer Madeline The Person Talks Joni Mitchell, Secret Melodies, And New Single “MEAN!”

This Alt-Pop star is back!

With over 1 Million monthly listeners on just Spotify alone, Madeline has proven herself as a chart-topper. Now, she’s back with her brand new and already popular single entitled “MEAN!”.

We had the absolute amazing honor of talking with Madeline about her previous EP, how she writes her songs, and more!

You are a Singer/Songwriter what made you want to start that and being in this industry?

M: “I was surrounded by music in my family growing up, so it only felt natural. I used songwriting as a means of coping with my big emotions starting when I was 10. For a long time, I didn’t think it was realistic for me to work in the music industry, but I just kept making songs and it happened.”

On April 29, you came out with a song called “Mean” . What made you want to write that?

M: MEAN! was written about a really specific incident where someone said something to me at a party that absolutely crushed my feelings. I remember feeling like time had stopped and I was just shrinking in the middle of that party. I realized afterwards that I am so happy that I am not mean like that. I love myself for the simple fact that I would never want to make someone feel small and insignificant. I wanted to describe that empowered feeling I felt after that realization that I am awesome because I am kind.”

In 2021, You came out with an Ep called Chapter 1: The Longing what was your inspiration for the Ep?

M: “Chapter 1: The Longing was inspired by my childhood and growing into myself as a person. I wanted to capture the feelings of loss that we often overlook during childhood. People think that children don’t understand loss, but I can tell you first hand that that’s not true. Being young and experiencing grief is so difficult because no one prepares you for it and no one tells you what to do. I wanted to make sure the people that unfortunately felt that too could feel like they have a friend in me.”

Out of all the songs on the EP, which one meant the most to you?

M: “My favorite song on my first EP was “Gladly” because it was a declaration that my emotions are a huge part of who I am and I won’t be hiding or pushing them aside anymore. It feels so empowering to sing that song, even now.”

When you are writing a song do you focus on the lyrics first or the music?

M: It really depends, usually I have a lyric idea first. Lyrics are the most important for me personally and they’re my favorite part. Rearranging words to capture a feeling is one of the most satisfying things ever.”

Do you have anyone that you look up to as a Singer/Songwriter?

M: Joni Mitchell is my biggest inspiration. The stories that she tells truly transport you to a different universe. I grew up listening to her because my dad was a huge fan, and I’ve always, even as a kid, been enamored by her. She is magic.”

Since quarantine started back in 2020 how much do you think has changed in terms of Songwriting since the pandemic started?

M: “I had a lot of time to myself in my room to write, which is my favorite way to write. For that, I was so grateful. I think there is something so special about no one else in the entire world knowing your songs exists. Only you in your room with your secret melodies.”

The final question for the interview is what is some advice for younger generations that would like to be a Singer/Songwriter one day?

M: “The biggest piece of advice that has saved me and I still remind myself today is to write for yourself. I never imagined that any of my songs would ever see the light of day when I wrote them as a kid, and that’s where beautiful art comes from. When you’re not imagining anyone but yourself hearing your words, they can be so tender and personal. That is how you eventually connect with people. Being frank and honest with yourself comes first, and then it will be such a gift to people when you decide to share your art.”
