LA-Based Singer Rose Betts On Songwriting, Sinatra, And Her Debut New Album “White Orchids”

This album is already a playlist-must!

Singer-Songwriter Rose Betts is not a stranger to the mainstream music industry. After her music appearances in everything from Zach Snyder’s “Justice League” to CW’s “Legacies”, Rose is back with a new, completely self-written, album entitled “White Orchids”.

We had the absolute honor of talking with Rose on her favorite single off of the album, a message for her fans, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

R: “I started writing songs at about 11 but only considered it seriously at about 17 when everyone at school was picking out Universities and I realised making music made me feel something I never felt from anything else, a special kind of joy, and I didn’t want that to end.”

Tell us about your amazing new album “ White Orchids”.

R: White Orchids” has been a project I’ve poured so much of myself into, there’s barely anything left! The title of the album comes from a song within it which in turn was inspired by a metaphor F Scott Fitzgerald uses a lot in The Great Gatsby in connection with the lead female character Daisy, often describing her as an orchid. This metaphor for innocence and purity was interesting to me especially because an orchid is such a delicate flower, unable to support itself and with such a brief bloom. The songs in my album came from a time in my life that was like a white orchid, a bloom of innocence, a beautiful and heady time of love and playfulness with a particular set of friends in this mansion we ended up living in in North London. Even while inside this time I felt nostalgic for the loss of it, I knew it could not support itself and all my songs explore this heartbreak, the loss of something so pure. Combing through the ruins of this time was an act of coming to terms with it, and I hope the album encapsulates this.”

If you had to choose, what is your favorite song on the album and why?

R: “Hard question! If I had to choose… gosh it’s hard, I flit around on this but I think I’ll go for Recovery. Writing that song, in the eye of the storm, changed the way I write songs now. I finally laid myself bare in a song, allowed myself to be vulnerable. I used to hide inside songs a bit, I didn’t in Recovery and I realised the power of that.”

What is your songwriting process typically like?

R: “It varies so much. Sometimes I react in the moment to something that just happened or something I’m feeling strongly about, and sometimes ideas float about for a while before they take enough shape to become a song. And sometimes I’ll just sit down at a piano and say “ok i’m going to write a song now” and see what happens. My song ‘Think of You’ actually started being written in a dream! I know it sounds nuts but I heard all the parts in the dream, woke up and sang them into my phone and the bones of the song were all there. That doesn’t happen very often though lol.”

What has been your reaction to receiving Millions of streams on your music?

R: “It’s been pretty great seeing my music connect with people over the past year! It’s the kind of thing you really want and then as soon as it happens and the numbers get a bit crazy it all starts to feel a bit surreal but I love hearing from people who’ve connected to my songs, hearing their versions and duets… “

If you could collab with any artist, who would it be and why?

R:Argh this is hard. I grew up listening to a British band called Keane, I think I’d probably peak if I worked with them. That and Sinatra of course, but mainly just to be able to be in the same room while he was singing.”

Is there anything you would like to say to your encouraging fans?

R: Thank you’ feels very obvious but it is as simple as that. I read as many of the comments from fans that I can, and I can’t tell you how much each one means. I never take their support for granted, and that they have taken my music into their homes and their hearts is a kind of magic I can’t get enough of. It’s wonderful to have such good company on my musical journey.’

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

R: “I keep busy on tiktok (@rosebettsmusic), that’s where I share all my new songs and have a bit of a laugh and I’m also on instagram too (@rosebettsmusic) which is where I share updates on gigs and tours and releases :).”
