The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced today, Monday morning. There were major leaps made in the areas of representation for women as well as people of color.
‘Mank’, led the pack with a total of 10 nominations. The black and white drama centers around Herman J. Mankiewicz’s process for writing the screenplay for the all time class, ‘Citizen Kane.’
According to the Academy, a total of seventy women hold 76 nominations, which is a new record for a single year. Two women were nominated in the category of ‘Best Directing’ for the first time in film history. Chloe Zao, the director of ‘Nomadland’, is the first woman of color to be nominated in that category.
The Oscars are set to air on April 25, 2021 on ABC. The host will be announced at a later date.
