An actress changing the world!
Symone Fairchild wears many hats. In addition to her entertainment career, she created the company EyeOnDV which provides resources and encouragement to domestic violence survivors.
We had the amazing honor of talking to Symone about what prompted her to create her company, advice to survivors, and more!
What first prompted you to create ‘EyeOnDV’?
S: “What prompted me to create EyeOnDV was sheer anger…anger that the same deplorable actions were traumatizing more and more people and it was completely unnecessary. Worst of all, it seemed as if nothing was being done about it. In group counseling, I was meeting more and more people who had experienced their own versions of the same abusive patterns of behavior that I had experienced. I came to realize that if our stories were relatively the same, following a pattern, then domestic violence could be stopped and I knew that it had to be. It had gotten to the point where I could no longer sit back and listen to other survivor’s stories and not do anything about it. I knew how impactful it was for me to have support and how that support laid the foundation for me to drastically and consistently improve my life. Since that was the case for me, I knew that would be the case for virtually every survivor on the planet. I knew that I had to, at least, provide safe, non-judgemental, compassionate space for survivors, so that’s what I set out to do with EyeOnDV, and it grew from there.”
You have done several interviews where your guests have given insight into the topic of domestic violence. Which interview sticks out to you the most so far, and why?
S: “Well, there are two survivors that I can not choose between because their interviews are equally as impactful but for different reasons: Janell Moreau and Jermaine Johnson. With Janell, the sheer scope of
her experience, her willingness to be transparent and vulnerable, her determination to always get back up, always seek help and more information, always fight for herself and especially her children, was and still is so inspiring. She never gives up. She never stops. With Jermaine Johnson, the courage it took him to speak out is rare. The vast majority of men will never publicly admit that they experienced domestic violence. He not only speaks on it but he has let it inspire him to become and continue to grow in his greatest self. He also lets it inspire him to lead a life of service to help and counsel others through their own trauma.”
A few months ago your cover with Scars of Survival Magazine was on an Atlanta billboard! How did it feel to have you and your important message shared in such a big way?
S: “I must admit that this felt AMAZING! Although I wasn’t expecting it, I was so honored for both myself and EyeOnDV to be recognized. I also felt that it was the start to the necessary exposure EyeOnDV will need to be able to help those in need globally.”
What advice can you give to our readers who may have experienced domestic violence in the
past?
S: “There is ALWAYS help out there. There is ALWAYS someone out there that cares. You are NEVER alone. It is NEVER your fault. You DO NOT and NEVER WILL deserve abuse or trauma. You are worthy of love and to be loved. At a certain point it is important to reframe your mindset of experiencing abuse to just that, an experience. This takes the power away from your abuser and back into your hands to do what you need with it. It does not, nor will it ever define you. It is also a tool. A tool to learn from. A tool to teach you the nuances, subtleties, and red flags that lead to abuse so that you can identify it in future potential relationships. And surviving abuse is not the end of the road, it is the beginning of your new, wonderful life that you were meant to live. Healing is hard but once you do it, it’s done, and the next step is thriving, which is the ultimate prize of all your hard work. You are worth the hard work to heal. Seek out the help and support you need to do it, always take it one day at a time, and KEEP GOING!”
When not working in the entertainment industry, or working for your organization, what are
some of your favorite things to do?
S: “This is an interesting question for me because it really challenges me to dig deep. I loooove what I do so I spend all of my time working on the entertainment projects I have that are at various stages and growing and improving my organization so that it better serves those in need. These things literally don’t feel like work. They are my mission so I take great joy in being able to dedicate my life to them. But, outside of them, I love going to the movies, horseback riding, archery, bowling, taking nice, peaceful drives up the coast, having meeting-of-the-minds types of conversations, engaging in personal growth activities and more.”
Where can we keep up with your amazing organization and your journey?
S: “You can keep up with EyeOnDV on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The handle for EyeOnDV on each platform is the same: @eyeondv. You can keep up with my journey on TikTok, Instagram, and
Facebook…all having the same handle as well: @symonefairchild. I am in the final development
stages of my website: www.symonefairchild.com. It will be live and accessible soon. Thank you!”
