This young actor is in the big leagues!
At such a young age, actor Grayson Thorne Kilpatrick already has so many acting credits under his belt. You may recognize him from everything from BRAT’s “Chicken Girls: The Movie” or the star-studded film “Daddy’s Home”. Now, he has a starring role in Season 2 of TBS’s “CHAD”.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Grayson on dream co-star, emotional acting beginning, and more!
What first inspired you to become an actor?
G: “Well, this is kind of a lengthy story. There was a traumatic experience that was life changing for me when I was around 3 years old. My parents and I lived through a home invasion. My parents are my heroes because my mom was able to convince the invaders they had the wrong house because they did. This gave her enough time to lock the door behind them and get me and my dad into a back room of our house until police arrived. After the home invasion, my parents wanted to put me in Child Play Therapy. It was a place where a young child that was really young and did not know how to explain what they were going thru could act out their feelings. I know even several months after the home invasion when I heard a doorbell, I would run and hide under a kitchen table. So, needless to say I had some Anxiety regarding this event and my mom had PTSD she was working thru.
A few years later mom ask me if I wanted to take an acting class and I usually replied “Nah”. She told me a few years later she thought I had a talent but she did not want to push me into something she was not sure I wanted to do.
In 2012, my life completely changed. My dad had read in the local newspaper that Grayson Russell (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) was in town filming his new movie Space Warriors at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Grayson Russell was going to be at a local movie theater viewing his latest film Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie series with fans and would be signing autographs before the movie. So, my dad got our family and one of my friends, Mason, a ticket to go watch the movie. Grayson Russell was great! I felt a kinder spirit with him because I was almost eight at the time we both had red hair, and both named Grayson. He took the time to answer my questions and took pictures with me. At the screening of the film, Grayson mentioned they were looking for extras to be in the movie he was filming. I asked my mom if she could take me to the Space and Rocket Center to where this film was being filmed to see if I could be an extra. She did and I was able to be an extra on Space Warriors and fell in love with the environment. I loved watching the crew move their equipment around to do the same scene but to get the shot from different angles. The next week, my mom enrolled me in a local acting school called Hollywood Huntsville. I took classes under Bill and Ayoka Billions and later took acting classes from Gray’s Studio out of Los Angeles; David Gray would travel once a month to Nashville area and conduct a weekend intense training. We would travel to Nashville once a month.
I booked my first web series in 2013 called Unplanned Motherhood. After that, mom found me a talent agent in Nashville, Atlanta and New Orleans. It was in March 2013 I booked my very first movie called Campin’ Buddies. I got to work with legendary actors like Don Most (Ralph Mouth from Happy Days), Tom Lester (Ep from Green Acres), Ray Stevens and Victoria Jackson. Tom Logan was the best Director for my first film experience. I also had a great mentor actor, Danny Vinson. I still send him messages and ask him questions. We were actually in the movie Heaven Bound together and I was lucky to get to film with Torry Martin, Jamie Costa, Victoria Jackson (my second movie with the SNL legend), Michael Joiner and Nancy Stafford. When production found out it was my birthday, they had craft services bake me a cake and sang “Happy Birthday” to me. I also got the chance to ride a horse around the set! How cool is that? Thank you, Adam Drake, director of this great movie, for giving me an opportunity to work with you!
I am very proud of my accomplishments but by no means do I feel like I have made it. My parents are a huge influence in my life. They gave up their careers in Alabama to move to Los Angles to give me a chance. For me this and keeps me humble.”
What can you tell us about your amazing role in Season 2 of CHAD?
G: “Not much right now except that, I am recurring on this amazing TV series, which will start July 11th on TBS. I am so very grateful to Warner Brothers/TBS and the amazing star of this show Ms. Nasim Pedrad for this opportunity. The Cast and crew were the best they so very welcoming and supportive.”
Do you think you have anything in common with your character?
G: “On July 11th when Season 2 starts we will see.”
You have already been able to work with some impressive names so far in your career. Is there anyone you would love to work with someday?
G: “Absolutely, I would love to work with James McAvoy one day the movie Split and Glass where he played a man with twenty-four personalities blew me away how he could change his character and you and the audience knew who these characters were. I would love to work with Jordan Peele he is beyond amazing I loved his film Get Out, that physiological Thriller that messes with your mind some. I would love to work with Blumhouse, Actor /Director Taika Waititi, anything Marvel or DC I am a huge Comic book fans thanks to my mom introducing me to that world and giving me some of her collectibles. I have always wanted to work with Robert Downy Jr. he can play any character Action Hero, Comedic, Drama, and Thriller. To learn from someone like that to be a well-rounded actor is what I want to be. I just want to be on set and work but my dream is to get the opportunity to be a lead in a film to be able to show a director I can really be that actor they are looking for. I think being so fair complexed and red headed the first thing you think is bully or nerd. I can do that and so much more. You know the Elongated Man was originally red headed so was Banshee, Daredevil. I still hope one day Marvel or DC will come calling ;).”
What valuable lesson have you learned from being in the entertainment industry?
G: “Just be your self do not change the person you are to be something different. I have seen so many people to change themselves to be more of influencer to get their social media numbers up and join these influencer houses. I do not want to be an influencer. I want to be an Actor I am thankful to all my fans that are following me. I try my best to answer all my comments and messages and sometimes I see some of my fans doing a live and I will go into their live feed to say hi.
Sometimes in this business, you get down because you audition and get callbacks and even are placed on hold. Then you do not get the role. There has been so many I have been so close on. I am happy for the actor that got the role of course and I know it was not meant to be you just have to wait for the next one and hope that one is meant for you. You have to learn to accept the disappointments in this business and not take it personally on your acting abilities. So in the mean time I am working on my health I started working out with a Trainer to lose weight and get in shape.”
What was your experience like being on the set of American Horror Story?
G: “It was unbelievable it was the biggest set I had ever been on at that time. AHS actually created a street for the sake of one or two shots. It blew my mind at how much effector they went to create that perfect shot and scene. The makeup department made me look like a werewolf in like 15 minutes. I could not believe how I looked to myself. When I went back to my trailer, my dad was waiting for me there and he could not believe it was me. It completely blew him away. I loved that experience and I hope to get more of these experiences in years to come.”
What message do you have for your fans?
G: “I would like to say Thank you to them for supporting me, following me on my social media. I could not be where I am today without them and their support. If you see me out please say hi to me, I love meeting you all.”
