“My Unorthodox Life”s Star Miriam Haart On Stanford, Relationship, And Season 2

A true icon in many ways!

A Netflix reality-tv star, and a Stanford student? The definition of goals. Actress Miriam Hart is known for her spotlight role on Netflix’s new series “My Unorthodox Life”.

Our incredible reporter Bryana Medina chatted with Miriam on being apart of the LGBTQ+ Community, past internship, and more!

Q: It is incredibly inspiring how you have owned who you are in the series “My unorthodox life”. What can viewers expect or learn from the series?

 M: “Candidly, the show is about a myriad of things. However, to me, the main message is the power of love. Although my family has different religious standings throughout the series and within our lives, we still stand side to side and adore each other immensely. From our story, viewers can expect to learn that nothing is impossible if you truly do not take no as an option. My mother completely built herself up into the powerhouse that she is today.

Despite having no college degree, no access to the outside world, and no one to stand by her. I, coming from horrendous school education, not being able to play sports or do what I love for most of my life, managed to get into Stanford University and build numerous iOS apps from self-teaching and a whole lot of grit. Anything is possible and love trumps all, to me are the main messages of the show. An important aspect as well as the importance of female empowerment, helping other women become financially independent and live the lives they want to be living. That is my goal, that is the goal of my family and you can expect to learn more about that in the series as well.”

Q: You have expressed your sexuality and shown the people you’ve been dating in the show. Are you dating anyone right now?

M: “Yes. I am currently dating Nathalie Ulander, a Swedish tennis player living in New York. We’ve been together for upwards of 9 months. I love her and feel elated when I’m with her. She’s my first long-term girlfriend and I relish our moments together.”

Q: What is some advice you can give to young adults who are scared or uncomfortable with coming out as part of the LGBTQ community?

M: “One thing that took me a long time to learn in my journey of accepting my sexuality is this. I always felt out of place in queer communities because I didn’t feel like I was “queer” enough. Yes, I was attracted to all genders, but no I never watched RuPaul. What I have come to cognize, is that there is no right way to be queer. To me, it isn’t even about being queer at all. It is simply about just being you. If being you mean that you like girls and boys, then great. If being you means you like wearing basketball shorts while wearing pink nail polish then also great. But I want to break the stereotype of what it means to “be” a lesbian. What it means to “be” a bisexual. I want to remind people that the most important thing is to be themselves, their sexuality does not have to be their only identity and define who they are, you get to do that all on your own, and with pride.”

Q: In the show, there was a part where you invited people you dated in the past to an event. Can you tell us more about what happened that night or if you guys are all close friends?

M: “Unfortunately, my mind was preoccupied with the launch party of my app Eaziit, and I paid no attention to the fact that I invited everyone that I dated in New York to my event. I never on bad standings with anyone I broke up with so it really wasn’t an unpleasant launch party. I think a few of them do talk to each other still to so I’m happy for them!”

Q: Even though all the different beliefs and opinions you and your family have, how do you guys stick together through it all?

M: “Once again, love trumps all. We just simply decide to agree to disagree. We are allowed to have different beliefs and values and still be united. I think there is a great message to learn from this. Even if someone has different beliefs than you, you can still love them and care for them just as my family truly loves each other.”

Q: Has your name legally changed to Haart or is it still in the process?

M: “It is legally changed! I actually just updated my licenses this past month so now I am really Miriam Haart!”

Q: In the show, you were interning for Elite World Group building and updating apps. How has that been for you and are you still currently interning?

M: “Currently, I am finishing up my last year at Stanford. So I am no longer interning for Elite World Group. It was a joyous experience. Everyone at Elite is so affable and kind and eager to create something that people care about. I was happy to be working on a project that allowed me to truly test myself and use my skills by designing and building an app for them.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

M: “I see myself working within the family business within the digital and tech space. Ideally, I will be toying with emerging technologies and seeing what can be done with them. Maybe I will have started an organization that combats human trafficking as that is the cause that I care most about and I feel is most under-discussed.”

Q: How has having a mother who is such a powerhouse, confident, courageous woman influence you to make a difference in society?

M: “She inspires me every day. She taught me that a no is simply a slow yes. That being kind and generous should be values that apply to all people in any context. She helps me to believe that there is no ceiling and you can grow and grow until you decide you want to stop. I am so grateful to have a mother that is true also my best friend. Every dinner conversation is invigorating. I’m learning topics spanning from Mussolini’s impact on World War II to the high nutrient density of bean sprouts. She is so much fun to talk to and I love her dearly.” 

Q: Big congrats on another season of “My unorthodox life”. What can we expect in the new season?

M: “You can expect MORE OF EVERYTHING. In Season 2, we are more vulnerable. More out there. More open, so it is more exciting. I cannot wait for you all to see all of the surprising things that happen and stay tuned for when it comes out!”
