‘Emily In Paris’s Philippine Leroy Beaulieu On Sylvie And Exciting New Role!

Philippine is the reason we love a good TV villian!

Philippine has become an internationally loved actress. After starring in Netflix’s ‘Call My Agent”, she is back as a lead character in the Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy “Emily in Paris”.

We had the absolute honor of talking with Philippine on her Netflix role, advice for others, and the Crown!

Q: What made you realize you wanted to become an actress?

P: “I grew up in Rome, where my father was an actor. It was the era of the great Italian cinema, Cinecittà and the flowering of Italian creativity in that field. I grew up in that atmosphere, with crazy artists around me, every Sunday the house was full of people always making life a game. It seemed natural for me to follow that path…

When you grow up with Rossellini playing with you hide and seek behind the great Roman pine trees, when Cy Twombly shows you how to draw in his majestic bohemian atelier,  and Claudia Cardinale pinches your baby cheeks in a cascade of laughter, you don’t realize what these people represent, you just take in the beauty and the richness of their “bigger than life” personalities! The 70’s In Rome were insanely magical. That feeling of freedom still inspires me deeply. “

Q: You played the iconic role of Sylvie in Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris.

P: “Sylvie was written for a 35 years old woman. But the casting director gave me the sides to read and I knew I could play her. So we decided I should give it a try. Darren Star had seen me in « Call My Agent » and was curious to see what I could do with it. I did my audition and waited almost two months to get some feedback. I thought they had chosen someone else and I forgot about it. Turns out they thought « it’s her! » as soon as they saw my audition. But they probably had to really think it through because it did change the balance of the storyline to hire me!

Q: What did you enjoy most about playing your character Sylvie?

P: “She’s sassy, vulnerable, has a dry sense of humor. She’s politically incorrect. She’s French! And being Emily’s nemesis allows me to say and do stuff you usually don’t do or say in real life. She’s my first villain and I’m loving it!”

Q: What was your favorite memory on the set of Emily in Paris

P: “Working on this production is very demanding yet very exciting. So much stuff to remember, both incredibly fun and trying! But I guess my best memory will always be to have an angel following me during filming, that takes my 12cm heels off and puts my feet in my comfy boots in between takes!”

Q: What was it like working with such an amazing cast?

P: “We’re very lucky to be such a diversely talented cast. Every actor for every character that comes on set for one or two days is carefully chosen by Darren Star who really has a great eye for actors!”

Q: We know you can’t reveal too much but what can fans expect to see in season two of Emily in Paris?

P: “They can expect to see other very unexpected sides of Sylvie. I can’t really say anything…. !”

Q: What inspires you the most as an actress?

P: “The character. Clearly. And then the vision of the author.”

Q: Given that you’ve had such a successful career, what advice would you give to aspiring actors/actresses?

P: “Every path is unique. Just trust your instincts and don’t listen to the naysayers!”

Q: Any exciting new projects we should be on the lookout for?

P: “I just worked in The Crown – a humble participation! – and it was fantastic!!!! Great writing and directing!”
