An artist you need to know!
Over the course of just a few years Charlotte Morris has gained a fanbase based on her beautiful voice and incredible music (I mean, have you ever listened to ‘Good Kind of Hurt’? Life changing.). But, her most recent single ‘Raised By A Woman’ might be one of her best releases yet.
We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Charlotte about her evolution as an artist, van life, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to put your music out into the world? Did you have any hesitations, or was it full confidence from day one?
C: “I realized that I wanted to release my own music in high school – when I discovered that I could have an effect on people that way that the artists of my childhood had on me. So it’s been a long time that I’ve had this dream. But I would be so shocked if any artist said they had full confidence! There are always hesitations. Especially as an artist who writes exclusively about my life and my experiences, it is absolutely terrifying to share new music with the world. I’m not just creating a new song, I’m basically tearing out a page of my journal and posting it online for everyone to see. It’s very vulnerable and really scary at times. But I do feel confident in the fact that this is what I’m supposed to be doing. There’s nothing else that brings me the joy and fulfillment that writing and performing does. If there was, I’d be doing it, because I’m sure it would be an easier path than this hahah!”
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘Raised by a Woman’ and how it came to be.
C: “I started writing “Raised by a Woman” as a love song to the man the song talks about. I wanted to highlight the beauty of emotional intelligence, vulnerability, and softness that so often society tells men to avoid. But as I started writing, I realized that so much of what makes the wonderful men in my life what they are are the women who raised them. The mothers, aunts, sisters, and friends. The women who influence, and sacrifice, and constantly think of others before themselves. The song quickly turned into an anthem, an homage, to women, and to mothers. And as I’ve lived with the song, and performed the song, I’ve also come to realize just how much of it is influenced by the women who raised me as well.”
If you had to choose, what has been your favorite song you’ve released so far and why?
C: “This is such a hard question. And I honestly think I would have a different answer if you asked me on a different day. But I’ve really been in my empowered & outspoken women playlists recently, and so I think my answer today is “Villain.” The song shows a side of me that I don’t write with a lot, but that is a big part of who I am – I am outspoken, and often unapologetic, and I get loud, and angry sometimes. I am opinionated, and “Villain” is all of that and more.”
You recently finished your Wild Child 2024 Tour! What was that experience like for you? Any highlights you’ll never forget?
C: “It was absolutely amazing. It was better than I ever could have imagined, though it was also absolutely exhausting. I am still so tired, both physically and emotionally. But truly, it was life changing. That sounds dramatic, but about halfway through my first big leg, I realized a number of things about being an artist, and what I would have to do to continue growing. Because of some of these realizations I packed up my life and moved to Philly, I shifted my priorities for 2025 planning, so, like I said, life changing. Hah!
One of my favorite moments of tour was performing for the first time in Hillsborough, NC. I had never played there, or even passed through, so I was surprised when there was a pretty decent turnout! But the moment that really struck me, and kind of triggered some of the above life-changing thinking, was that there were folks there who had randomly found me on Spotify & Instagram, loved my music, and then saw I was going to be in town and came! When you’re not on the road, and you’re just releasing music and hoping to connect with folks through a screen or a streaming service, it can get really disheartening. The thoughts of, “is anyone even seeing this??” can really fester. But to see how the pipeline of release to social media to listener to actually coming out for a show can happen, it gave me such a boost and made me realize that I need to be on the road as much as possible in order to connect with people in person.”
At this point, we don’t think there’s many states that you haven’t performed in! Is there a certain state or city you want to perform in, whether it be for the first time or returning?
C: “I would love to get up to Washington state, both because I want to explore the nature but also because I hear such amazing things about Seattle’s music scene!”
How do you think you’ve grown, both as an artist and as a person, from your debut EP ‘To New York, with Love’ to now?
C: “Oh my gosh. Do you have a couple of hours? I have grown so much in so many ways as both a person and as an artist since To New York, with love. For the sake of time, I won’t go into all of the nitty gritty, but the two biggest ways I’ve grown… first and foremost, my songwriting has changed & improved, in my opinion, immensely. I think some of that comes with age, and experience, and time, but I credit a huge part of it to the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project and living in Nashville. I was given the opportunity to participate in the 2021 JM program which, for anyone unfamiliar, is a yearly, week-long songwriting intensive that selects anywhere from 10-15 writers to participate. This was one of the first times that I was given critique, and advice on my personal songwriting. In college, I wrote a lot of musical theatre and was given guidance for that, but the JM program was the first time I was able to share my songs, the ones about my life and emotions, and experiences, and receive feedback from both our mentors and my contemporaries in the program. A week sounds like a really short amount of time, but when you’re writing and sharing and rewriting 24/7, it is life changing. During this week, I started looking at writing differently; I started allowing other genres to influence my writing. I was constantly inspired by the other writers in my program. It truly shifted everything about the way I write, compose, and perform my music.
The other big thing, and I do think they’re all tied together ultimately, as that since To New York, with love, I have become so much more confident in who I am as a person. Over the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time with myself, learning to love myself without outside validation. It’s an ongoing process, but thinking back to my debut EP, there was so much I was unsure of as a person, and while some of that influenced the emotion of my writing in a really beautiful way, it also made me question choices that I was making in the production process. Now, I am so much more confident going into the studio. I know more of who I am as a person, and therefore as an artist, and so when recording and releasing my new music, there is a bigger vision and purpose that I didn’t have before.“
We have got to talk about your van life-It is awesome! What first inspired you to try out van life and would you recommend the lifestyle?
C: “I first tried out van life at the beginning of 2021. We were still in the height of COVID and, when everything hit, I moved out of New York City to stay with my family outside of Philadelphia. Originally, the plan was to only be there a few weeks as things blew over, but we got towards the end of 2020 and all the sudden I had been there for about 8 months. I knew that I didn’t want to move back to New York, but I also knew I could not keep staying with my parents (as much as I do love them hah!). I was also just itching to travel, but wanted to find a way to explore and hike and adventure without actually having to interact with people. So I did a lot of research and eventually decided I would rent a converted van for a few months and try to get to as many National Parks as possible. I drove from Philadelphia to the California Coast and back, seeing as much of the country as I could. I realized pretty quickly just how much I loved being on the road, and being in the van.
I’m a very type-A person. I plan ahead, I organize, I’m not a “go with the flow” girl. But the van actually allowed me to be more flexible. I didn’t have to worry where I was staying that night, or if plans got derailed by weather or traffic, because the van was my bedroom, my kitchen, my bathroom. It had everything I needed, regardless of where I was. So I definitely fell in love with the lifestyle, and by the time I started heading back to PA, I was already looking up companies that I could work with to convert my own van! The lifestyle is definitely not for everyone. I wouldn’t say it’s luxurious, and you definitely have to love small spaces. But it gives you so much freedom, and opportunity to see parts of the world that you might not have seen otherwise, given you’re driving everywhere. For me, as I am almost always on the road by myself (well, with my dog!), it’s also taught me so much about who I am as a person. I’ve learned and grown so much as an individual because I am given the space to be by myself in nature, on the road, and in situations that are new to me.”
