Making music that just gets us.
Wearing her heart on her sleeves, Maddie Regent’s music is captivating and make us viewers feel seen and understood. And her newest single ‘You could break my heart’ is no exception.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Maddie about working with her boyfriend Cade Hoppe, taking time to make music, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
M: “I think I’ve always loved telling stories. I did musical theatre for a long time, and that’s really where I fell in love with performing. Once I realized I could sing and that I loved it, it all made sense. In terms of what actually made me pursue it seriously, I think meeting people who were already doing it made me realize it was possible to give it a shot, even if on a smaller level. It was really daunting at first, but I quickly gained confidence after releasing my first few songs.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single “You could break my heart” and how it came to be.
M: “This was one of the first songs my partner Cade Hoppe and I made in our home studio. Cade had just got a violin and was learning how to play it well enough to produce something with it. I think it started with the piano as usual, and once we added the violin lines it truly felt like something completely different from what we’d made before. The line “you could break my heart if it meant you would hold it” came first, and we decided to just keep writing verses about that kind of love— when you’re in too deep and you’re so into it that you are willing to risk being hurt.”
What is it like exploring music alongside your boyfriend Cade? Do you have a personal favorite song of his?
M: “I love writing with him not only because he’s so talented, but also because he knows me in a way other collaborators don’t. It helps me to be really vulnerable in my songwriting and his talent helps me create in a way I couldn’t do by myself. My personal favorite of his is a song called “Moon” from his recent EP!”
What inspired you to take a brief break from your music career? Would you recommend it for artists trying to rediscover themselves?
M: “I’ve never taken a break from my career, I’ve just taken breaks between releases, but I’m always working on music in one way or another. For my next project, which I’m started to tease out now with these singles, I really threw myself into the whole artist project and just wrote and lived with the music and continued to develop myself as an artist. I really recommend taking the time to make music you really like. It’s also nice to have everything done before you start rolling out a project — it really helps me keep my sanity!”
How do you think you’ve grown as both a music artist and a person from writing music growing up, your debut EP in 2021 to now?
M: “I think I’ve become much more fearless when it comes to sharing feelings and life with others. I think I’ve become much more unapologetic with my music and personal life, and I’ve learned that what I have to say matters no matter how many people hear it.”
