You’ve definitely seen her on social media before!
With over 25 Million likes on just TikTok alone, Isabella Kensington has gone viral for her incredible voice and amazing music. She just released a new single, and it’s just a preview of her upcoming EP.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Isabella about her cover videos, ‘in another life’, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I: “I went to a Taylor Swift concert at Gillette Stadium during her Red Tour when I was 9 years old. I can remember a couple points in the show where I got filled with the feeling of “this is what I want to do.” She brought so much joy and community to that stadium with her presence—it made me want to provide that kind of support to the next generation in the same way she did for me.”
We have got to talk about ‘in another life’! Can you tell us more about the meaning behind it and how it came to be?
I: “I had just read a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid called ‘Maybe In Another Life,’ and I was in the thick of getting over a breakup. The book tells these parallel love stories after the main character makes a seemingly small but life-changing decision. I won’t spoil it, but I felt a sense of relief about where she wound up at the end of the book—and it gave me some peace knowing that there were different realities where I could end up happy.
When I stepped into the studio that day, I was feeling sad but had a glimmer of that peace. When the producer, Phil Cook, started playing that guitar hook at the beginning of the song, I knew where I wanted the story to go. I was so grateful to be able to work with Phil and Phia Brenan on the song—they are a dream team, and I wouldn’t have been able to reach the level of vulnerability that I needed to articulate those feelings without their support in that room.”
If you had to choose, what has been your favorite song you have released so far and why?
I: ‘all the best’ holds a special place in my heart as a song that I had held onto for so long. When it was received so positively, I was just so glad that there were people who could relate and who felt seen and empowered by it after going through their own difficult and complicated breakups.
And ‘loves me like L.A.’ also means a lot to me—I think my younger self would feel really proud if she heard it. It’s the kind of music I’ve always wanted to make.’
You have millions of streams on your music and over 25 Million likes on social media. What has been your reaction to your fame?
I: “When I started posting on social media back when the pandemic started, I set out to connect with as many people as possible. The fact that people have responded to that makes me so happy.
From the time I was young, my goal was always to build a platform so I could reach people, with the hopes that they would feel seen and less alone with my music. I have always wanted to be a role model and a part of raising the next generation. I’m grateful for the chance to do that.
That being said, some have jokingly used ‘Kensingtonians,’ and I have been calling them ‘Besties’ after my first single ‘all the best.’”
We love all of the cover videos you post! What artist would you love to start covering next?
I: “I’m glad you like them! I’ve been wanting to cover more of the 90’s/2000s rom-com artists that I love so much, like The Goo Goo Dolls, The La’s, Sixpence None The Richer, Ronan Keating, and Vanessa Carlton. I’ve done a few covers of some of their songs in the past and absolutely loved singing them, so I’m excited to try more!”
We hear that you are planning to release your debut EP soon! Can you tease what fans can expect from the project?
I: “Yes! It comes out on September 20th at midnight. I’m so excited for everyone to hear it. The songs are each a symbol of a pivotal moment or relationship from the last few years of my life.
In terms of teasers… the title of my EP, ‘not in a dollhouse anymore’ is actually from a lyric in the bridge of Track 1. And Track 5 is one of the saddest songs I think I’ve ever written.
Also, each lyric video of mine in this project has a secret message, so keep an eye out…”
