One of our favorite shows of all time is back and we are stocked! Months after an entertaining reunion of the OG series, Dance Moms is back for ‘A New Era’, and judging by its trailer this continuation of the franchise is about to be an exciting ride.
One of the dancers taking center stage is Bellatrix Castillo. She has been dancing for years and has only gotten better in time, which is what she considers to be the most validating aspect of dancing. “When I start working on a group dance or a new solo and they add a challenging trick or hard turning combination, it can be challenging. However, after months of practice, finally performing it on stage is incredibly validating. Growing my skills each year is very rewarding because it shows that all my hard work is paying off.“
Every dancer has a style that they are especially incredible at, and for Bellatrix, it’s a style that every Broadway fan knows and loves. “Right now, I would say my specialty is musical theater, but I’m starting to develop a growing passion for contemporary dance as well.” Speaking of Broadway, the young dancer has quite a musical theater background and has performed in multiple live performances, portraying some of the most iconic characters, including Moana and Cruella De Ville. And she’s just getting started. “I would love to play Mal or Evie from Disney’s Descendants. I really enjoy watching the movies and seeing how their roles are portrayed, and I think it would be amazing to be one of those two characters. But, if they ever did a junior version of Hamilton, I would be thrilled to play Eliza.“
But for right now, she is focused on Dance Moms and yes, she is a major fan of the OG show that lasted eight seasons. “I definitely watched the original show growing up, and my whole family loves it too. We often had it playing in the background in our living room. My mom and I used to joke about being on the show one day, but never in a million years did we expect to actually be part of such a huge franchise. I still can’t believe it.“
The original cast was dynamic and unique, to the point that almost every viewer saw themselves in at least one of the dancers on-screen, and Bellatrix saw one cast member in particular as an inspiration to her as both a performer and a person. “My favorite dancer was Chloe because she never seemed to care about what others thought of her; she just danced with confidence. Even if the moms said negative things or if she didn’t win, she would shake it off and remain supportive of those who beat her.“
If you remember the original series, you know that it was filled with jaw-dropping moments, and while she can’t tease much, Bellatrix has made it clear that there are going to be some exciting scenes to look forward to. “I can definitely say my hair wasn’t this short before I started, so you’ll have to watch and see what happens.“
And you don’t have to wait long! Make sure to tune in to watch Bellatrix and the rest of the girls make their TV debuts in Dance Moms: A New Era on August 7, available on Hulu!
