A triple threat!
Would you believe us if we told you that this entertainment icon on the rising just wrote, directed, and starred in a film that could possibly be one of the best of the year? Well, we are telling you the truth and if we were you, we would be finding out how to watch ‘The Blue Rose’ pronto.
We had the pleasure of speaking with George about the haunted behind-the-scenes of making the film, his love of ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’, and more!
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in entertainment?
G: “When I was a kid I used to think that DVDs were playing live as you watched them and that there was a troupe of actors patiently waiting on standby to broadcast their performance. And I thought the thermostat on my wall was a secret listening and recording device that would know when I placed a DVD into the DVD player. I would be mesmerized by the fact that I could rewatch the same movies over and over again and the performances would be the same without fail. Now, as I got older, I realized that my thermostat was just a thermostat and that my Blu-Ray of Troop Beverly Hills wasn’t a live performance every time I wanted to watch it. Once I found that out I became very invested in figuring out how I could make my own movies. I would record on PhotoBooth on my mom’s laptop, create my own stories with my Barbie dolls and action figures, and edit it all on iMovie when I was 5 years old. It was all I did… all day long… every day. When I started Kindergarten, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up and I said I wanted to be Tim Burton. That was what solidified my dream of making movies.”
Tell us more about your character in ‘The Blue Rose’. Do you think you have anything in common with your character?
G: “Dalton is very much a time capsule of who I was when I made this film. I think we share a lot of differences but equally share similarities. He feels like an extension of myself or a younger brother figure.”
The movie centers around detectives, including your character. Do you think you would make for a good detective in real life?
G: “Well, Dalton and Lilly aren’t very good detectives, and since Dalton is basically an extension of myself… I think you can guess what my answer would be haha.”
What was your experience like filming ‘The Blue Rose’? Can you share any funny/interesting stories?
G: “The asylum we shot in was haunted. Doors slamming by themselves, equipment malfunctioning, food flying off of tables by itself. It used to be a children’s tuberculosis ward and I think the kids wanted to play, eventually, they stopped after we started leaving candy from crafty in the corners of rooms throughout the hospital.”
The movie being in theatres is so exciting! Was there a particular movie growing up or recently that you have a fond memory of seeing in theatres?
G: “This is funny, but the first rated-R movie I ever saw in theatres was “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” and I was gagged. It’s objectively not the greatest film, but I loved it. I also had a Wizard of Oz-themed birthday party when I was a kid inside of a movie theatre and we screened the film on the big screen and it was super memorable.”
This is your directorial debut! Based on your experience directing this one, can you see yourself wanting to direct more in the future?
G: “Absolutely not.”
What is your best piece of advice for people who want to break into the entertainment industry?
G: “Don’t do it.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
G: “You can follow me on Instagram @sp00kyge0rge or look for me in your closet at night.”
