They are an icon in the making!
If you’ve been watching TV and movies for the past few years then you’ve definitely watched Donia steal the show with their undeniable acting talent.
We had the amazing honor of speaking with Donia about their love of horror, working with Jem Garrard, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
D: “As an only child, I had a lot of time to entertain myself. I always wondered how I could BE Aladdin or a Power Ranger. Since then I’ve done a lot of theatre leading me towards the industry.”
Tell us more about your experience filming the incredible new film ‘Slay’. Any fun stories you can share?
D: “It was jaw dropping – unbelievably incredible! I’m a huge fan of Jem Garrard. They’re a trailblazing non-binary Filmmaker. Plus, working with the queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race is a queer dream in itself. It was hard to keep a straight face between Jem’s writing and the queens. Their improv or reactions had me laughing literally out loud.”
Do you think you have anything in common with your character Jax?
D: “HUGE FAN OF DRAG QUEENS-YESSS! Being a non-binary person like Jax was a shoe in. I think Jax just lets out the inner unapologetic versions of ourself at every moment.”
The movie features several RPDR alums! Are you a fan of the show? Do you have a favorite queen? (We are Jan & Denali fans for life!)
D: “TOTAL Drag fan!! Was I going to meet RuPaul?! I was so curious about who was going to be cast as these four queens. The hard thing is I got to know these four queens personally. Sooo that makes it harder to have a favorite on the drag scene.”
‘Slay’ is a hilarious horror film! Are you a fan of horror movies? Did they ever scare you as a kid?
D: “Love horror. The first scary movie I saw was Scream. And let me just say, I didn’t get to finish it and know the ending as I was so scared that some teenager with that mask would chase me.”
Is there anything you would like to say to viewers who have loved watching the movie?
D: “I’ve been reading some of your shout-outs and ya’ll are amazing!! I think we should have a sequel, so we can SLAY another day!”
Lastly, we have to ask: In real life, if drag queens did have to face off against vampires, who would you expect to win?
D: “QUEENS! What do vampires have to face in real life? Death, thirst, and the occasional imprinting by dogs. Queen’s on the other hand have fiercely faced far more in this world. With a sharp heel, serving looks and throwing shade like the stakes depend on it.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
D: “I have the gram, @donia.kash or our gorgeous IMDB :).”
