Spencer Lord Shares His Advice For Aspiring Actors And Talks About Role In ‘Family Law’

One of our favorite actors!

From ‘The Good Doctor’ to ‘Heartland’, Spencer Lord has managed to capture our attention every time we turn on our TVs. Now, he’s starring in the entertaining series ‘Family Law’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Spencer about

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in acting?

S: “When I was 23, searching the internet for new music and literally falling asleep on my desk instead of actually doing work – just a touch disenchanted with the job – I realized that not only was I doing something I didn’t like, but I was doing a terrible job at it to boot, and without a doubt I would never succeed. I was choosing practicality because I was afraid of the unknown. So I started taking acting classes, got a job bussing tables, and eventually left my career in engineering behind for good. Best decision I ever made. And the stupidest. Absolutely moronic, really, but whew… I sure am happier for it.”

Tell us more about your character in CW’s ‘Family Law’.

S: “Aiden’s a sensitive guy with a savior complex lookin’ for a spark while he’s dousing the flames of a house fire. A firefighter with a penchant for skipping stones on the beach, eating stir fry on park benches, and getting in over his head at fancy lawyer parties.”

Do you think you have anything in common with Aiden?

S: “Probably that I would have absolutely nothing to talk about at a fancy lawyer party. I also am a big fan of stir fry.”

Because you are a part of the CW family, what are some of your all-time favorite shows from the network?

S: “I’m gonna have to go old school on this one and say The OC. Watched it front to back, at first because my sisters controlled the remote but in the end because I always wanted to be Ryan and ten year old me had a HUGE crush on Marissa. I cried myself awake every day for a week when she died.”

You now have a starring role in Heartland! Were you a fan of the show before you got your role as Nathan Pryce Jr.?

S: “Heartland is my mom’s favorite show – I’m pretty sure she’s watched it since it started almost twenty years ago. I can’t really explain how special it is for me to be on anything she loves to watch. I grew up on the couch beside her eating popcorn out of the big yellow Blockbuster popcorn bowl and watching so many series, including every 2000’s procedural in existence. We were cute as hell.”

Looking at where you started in your career and looking at how far you’ve come, what is your
immediate reaction to your success and achievements?

S: “On some level I understand that I’ve covered ground and really begun to build a career as a working actor, but I tend to move the goalposts pretty consistently and always have a hunger for whatever’s next, so the word “success” has sort of lost its meaning for me. It feels like I can’t find success because my goal is always several miles down the road. Probably something I should talk to my therapist about, eh?

Okay let’s just say I feel very proud of myself for all the hard work I’ve put in but there’s still plenty of work to be done and I think that’s the fun of it all anyways.”

What is the best piece of advice you can give to aspiring actors?

S: “I’m definitely not qualified to be giving advice but… we play for a living. We’re a bunch of children. So be a child, all the time if you can. See if you can find the wonder in everything you do. If you can, you’ll have fun with the work, and when you have fun with the work we as the audience can’t help but watch you.

Also, find your tribe and build a community. Find a mentor who can help you through the beginning stages of your career, because starting out is one of the toughest parts. Then enjoy the process, which really just means enjoy life.”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?
