An icon in the making!
Lorena Leigh is known for creating timeless bops that are perfect for every emotion. And, if you were looking for a new single to celebrate the merry season, then her new hit ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’ should do the trick.
We had the amazing honor of speaking with Lorena about performing live, her favorite song she has released so far, and more!
What inspired you to start making music?
L: “The internal need to express myself, connect with people & most of all, have fun. As a little kid, I would make up little rhythms on the kitchen table, rhyming and encouraging sing-a-longs to make my family laugh. I loved that feeling. When I got a bit older I started writing more as a means of therapy, or working out what I couldn’t logically figure out inside of myself. I was also looking for an escape from the dance industry & crafting songs for fun felt far more free-flowing & creative compared to the world of
technique & choreography that I was in.”
What was your favorite part about creating your new song “Angels We Have Heard On High”?
L: “It was a very spontaneous & quick creation…. I guess I could say that my favorite part was how easily it came together and fell into place and although it’s an old hymn, it feels like a new song to me.”
Merry Christmas! Do you have any Christmas traditions?
L: “Christmas dinner with my extended family— We get all dressed up and share a delicious meal in Dallas. My dad is one of 7 siblings… so there are quite a lot of us cousins. It’s a massive party!
A new tradition with my music is my “Cowgirl Mermaid Countdown to Christmas” virtual advent calendar! It’s my 3rd year doing it, I send out daily emails along with the reveal that happens each day on the homepage (www.lorenaleigh.com/advent) — It’s a fun & rewarding experience for me, getting to connect with those who participate. I have made quite a lot of Christmas music videos over the years, so, it’s amusing to look back, share them, and read the email replies!”
If you had to choose, what has been your favorite song you have released so far, and why?
L: “My favorite song I’ve released is “Whales.” “Whales” was a collaborative effort written and produced by Ernesto Valenzuela and myself. It’s a song about accepting Death & new chapters in life (or lives beyond). The first verse lyrics were inspired by the story of Dylan Smith, a surfer & lifeguard who saved lives in Rockaway Beach, Queens during Hurricane Sandy and then subsequently passed away a few months later while surfing. I never knew him personally but learned about his story in 2014 and from then on, it
always stuck with me. When we wrote the song at the start of 2020, I was just passing through NYC & knew it was about him. I love that song because when it came to us, it felt like a gift. I feel really connected to & expanded by it & hope others feel that way, too when they listen.”
What is something you have learned from your experiences in the music industry so far and will take with you throughout your career?
L: “I have begrudgingly learned patience and to have faith above all else. There’s that cliche “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey” — and it really is. Some of my closest friends are in my life because of my music journey & heck, I don’t know how I would’ve met my husband if it weren’t for music calling me to Ireland. Sometimes, I think our plans and ambitions are there merely to encourage us towards the next step we’re meant to take… while I can’t always control reaching the destination I envision for myself, I can embrace the meaningful people, places & experiences gathered along the way.”
You are closing out this year with so many concerts! What do you love the most about performing live?
L: “I love (and also sometimes hate, haha) the thrill of the unknown. Breaking through barriers and comfort zones. Each venue is different, every audience is unique and even my own state in a given moment will change with which songs I decide to play, or jokes I tell, or vulnerabilities I choose to divulge — I think in our internet age of replay & curated content; the live show experience with a community of people is more important than ever.”
If you could describe your life motto in three words, what would it be?
L: “Duck it up. Hahaha, I’d like to curse to drive the point home but I’m working on cursing less.”
