Frances is an icon in the making!
From Netflix’s ‘Kissing Booth’ movie series to her new role in ‘Fatal Seduction’, Frances Sholto-Douglas is quickly becoming one of the most well-known actresses in the entertainment industry.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Frances about learning to be direct, advice for aspiring actresses, and more!
What inspired you to start acting?
F: “Being on stage was the most exciting thing in the world to me when I was a kid. Whenever I got an opportunity to perform in any capacity, I would get this huge rush of excitement. It might sound a bit cliché, but I was very off-beat and struggled socially while growing up, so performing was my opportunity to connect with others and express myself in a way that didn’t involve socializing. I never really thought my focus would become film, but in high school, a friend of mine recommended I give it a try. I did a course in acting for film, and that was that. I became obsessed with the vulnerability and honesty of it – and that obsession has only grown deeper over the years.”
What was your favorite part about working on ‘The Kissing Booth’ movies?
F: “I can’t believe it’s been so long since we started filming The Kissing Booth. Looking back, I am so unbelievably grateful for the opportunity and all the fun that came with it. Getting to bring my character Vivian to life with so much silliness and love was definitely the highlight for me. The incredible actors I got to work with making me laugh every two minutes wasn’t half bad, either.”
Tell us more about your recent role in ‘Fatal Seduction’.
F: “I play the role of Laura – Zinhle’s best friend and possible love interest (you’ll have to watch the show to find out for yourself). Simply put, she’s a loyal friend, she’s proudly gay, and she’s a secret romantic. I fell head over heels in love with Laura as I explored her many complexities and conflicting motivations. We were given a lot of freedom in creating our characters, so I had the privilege of making strong choices regarding who she is and how she presents herself, and those choices had to come from a place of deep empathy and understanding.
One thing I really love about Zinhle and Laura’s relationship is that it approaches queer sexuality in a genuinely nuanced way. So often, I encounter people who see sexuality as being black-and-white, but Laura and Zinhle’s dynamic shows that categorizing your sexual orientation isn’t something that works for everyone. Laura and Zinhle’s complex friendship is one of my favorite aspects of the steamy Netflix series.”
Who would be your dream actor to work with next?
F: “Margot Robbie. We’ve all been in awe of her since The Wolf of Wall Street, right? If she’s busy, I’ll settle for a heart-wrenching drama with Paul Mescal.”
What is something you have learned from being on set and have taken with you throughout your career?
F: “I’ve learned to be direct. Starting out, I was extremely anxious about stepping on toes and I wasn’t confident enough to bring my ideas to the table. Now, I know that actors’ thoughts and ideas are often appreciated on set. If you honestly care about the project and your proposals are coming from a place of passion rather than ego, the people around you will likely be grateful for your input.”
Do you have any advice for other aspiring young actresses?
F: “A lot of young actors feel pressured to become very successful very quickly because otherwise, you’re viewed as a “struggling actor”. But, making yourself proud and having a strong sense of self is vital, and that doesn’t come with overnight success. Remember that you chose this career for yourself and no one else, and that means that you should enjoy it– don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.”
If you could describe your life motto in three words, what would they be?
F: “Don’t hold back.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
F: “My Instagram handle is “frances.claire” – you can follow me there. Alternatively, you can watch Fatal Seduction on Netflix worldwide to see me play one of my favorite characters of all time!”
