Tell us about your new single ‘Birthdays & Funerals’.
C: “It’s really crazy that “Birthdays & Funerals” is finally being released since I’ve had the idea written down in my phone for a long time. I came up with the concept and knew there was something to it, but I couldn’t figure out what it meant to me, so I decided to put it aside for a while. Earlier this year, I had a session with three amazing people, and the idea immediately clicked, so we began writing it. Even though it seems deep, it’s a simple love song at its core. The lyrics talk about a person you love so much that you want to spend all of life’s best and worst moments with. I love how we could take such a simple concept and reinvent it.”
How does this song showcase the EP?
C: “As I mentioned, “Birthdays & Funerals” is a love song about wanting to spend the highs and lows with someone. This song showcases the rest of the EP because it all builds off the concept of being in love. “Dear Son Or Daughter” is about having children and telling them what I wish I’d known. “How Did You Know?” is directed at my dad and discusses the question of knowing when it’s time to confess your love for someone. Without someone I knew I wanted to spend my life with, the thoughts and stories that inspired the rest of the EP would not exist.”
How is this EP different from your other EPs?
C: “Many of my past projects have been reflective, especially “1200 sq ft.” This EP is different because I feel like all of the songs are about the present, which is relatable to the mindset I have right now about living life in the moment.”
How does this explore the idea of a partnership built not only on sharing life’s joyful moments but also on confronting life’s most challenging trials together?
C: “As you mentioned, ‘Birthdays & Funerals’ is a metaphor for experiencing the highs and lows with someone. Looking at the highest high as someone being born and the lowest low as someone dying creates a broad spectrum that encompasses both extremes. I think a relationship won’t be as strong if you aren’t willing to experience both ends of the spectrum.”
How did working with David Hodges and Dan Swank transform the EP?
C: “The group of people I got to work with on this song and EP were incredible, and I know the EP wouldn’t be the same — or might not even exist — without them. David is an exceptionally talented producer who was able to support us by coming up with various musical instrument melodies that supported the lyrics perfectly. On the other hand, Dan was a breath of fresh air in the session and was extremely helpful in helping me figure out what I was feeling and helping me write about it. In addition to David and Dan, I also had the pleasure of working with Ricky Manning, an incredible writer who was crucial in helping us realize the concept of the song.”
How can we confront life’s most challenging trials together?
C: “The simple answer to this question is that we need to be willing to learn. Everyone comes from a different background, and we will always have different opinions on certain things. It’s essential to realize that we can disagree with others without letting these disagreements define us and push us away from one another. Our disagreements should only propel us in a positive direction because conflicting ideas allow us to think about new ideas and see things in a new light. If we all realize that our differences strengthen us, we can become better together and confront life’s challenging trials.”
How long was the process to create this EP?
C: “It took about 5 or 6 months to pick out and finalize the songs that belonged together on the EP. Even though it took a bit of time to create the EP, something special was that each song was finalized in one session. For all the songs that ended up on the EP, I created a finished product that I was really proud of in one day.”
If you could choose one song from the EP to sing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
C: ‘Birthdays & Funerals’.This song is an anthem for my life right now, and I know it will continue to be one as I grow up. I love the concept and am looking forward to performing it.”
