You have got to listen to her music!
Savannah Judy is one half of an amazing new music duo ‘Duplexity’. They just released their debut single titled ‘Billboards’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop!
We had the amazing honor of talking with Savannah about the music scene in Los Angeles, her unique songwriting process, and more!
When did you first decide that you wanted to start a band with your brother Luke?
S: “I first decided I wanted to start a band with my brother when I was really little. We would always
sing and put on shows for our parents. Recently we were reminded of this when we performed at a gig with a band that was with our close friends. I have always been in touch with music, and I have always planned on going into the music industry as a singer songwriter, but that night re-lit the fire for performing with a live band. It was my brother and I’s first gig since COVID-19 and it felt so great to be back on stage after such a long time not performing live. Since Luke and I started Duplexity, we couldn’t be happier, as it is truly a dream come true for the both of us. We are so excited for our new music to drop.”
How did you two come up with your band name ‘Duplexity’.
S: “Duplexity’s name went through a lot of stages. We had many different ideas and names that we jotted down, we used a process of elimination until we found “Duplexity”. I’m sure every band struggles with finding their name, because it can be super tricky and can be a lot of pressure because it is a major decision. Luke and I chose Duplexity simply because we loved the look of the word, the positive tone, and most importantly, the meaning. Duplexity is actually a word that means: “A Duo. The quality of being dual or double.” We knew this was the name we were going to use immediately because we have been a duo since day one! It was truly meant to be our name!”
What is your songwriting process like?
S: “My songwriting process, in my opinion, is pretty unique. When I write a song, it’s never intentional. I never sit down at my desk and tell myself, “Okay it’s songwriting time.” If I did that then I’d be sitting there for hours with one phrase written. Songs seem to just come to me, like an inspiration that hits. It’s usually a lyric idea or a topic or theme. Sometimes I write lyrics and melody first and sometimes instrumental first, it really just depends on my mood and the inspiration. Once I get the small idea, I get to writing. I can write songs pretty fast, but I find that my results are best when I take my time and let my brain take breaks from it. This is usually a one day to a few day process. I always prefer to write lyrics and melody at the same time because it’s like it’s accomplishing two things at once and it makes me feel productive. Then when I’m done with lyrics I’ll find chord progressions to go along with it and then it’s studio time!”
How would you personally describe the music scene in Los Angeles?
S: “The music scene in Los Angeles, if I were to describe it as a newcomer, would be eccentric, exciting, and full of opportunity. Los Angeles is a very musical place and it’s hard to go anywhere without hearing or seeing live music being performed. There’s live music everywhere, from street performers, jazz bands in clubs and restaurants to the Hollywood bowl featuring huge hit artists. LA is also home to major record labels, producers and music groups. In my opinion, Los Angeles is one of the biggest music hubs in the world. I feel so lucky to have grown up in LA and experienced the influence of such a musical city.”
If you two could collab with any music artist on a single, who would it be and why?
S: “If we could collaborate with any music artist on a single it would most likely be Billie Eilish and Finneas. They would be amazing to collaborate with because, not only does their music have such a cool unique sound, they are also siblings who work together to make music and they were homeschooled, just like my brother and I were! I feel like not only would we learn so much from them, we would get along because we have a lot in common and it would creatively be a life changing experience.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
S: “We have a band website www.Duplexityband.com. On our website we have links to all of our social accts and all of our press and upcoming events. Our personal IG’s @thesavannahjudy @thelukejudy.
