This Christian artist deserves a spot on your favorite playlist!
Merging the worlds of Christian music and R&B, Christian Paul is a music artist that is making his mark. He recently released an amazing single titled ‘Yes I Am’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Christian about doing shows around the country, advice for aspiring faith-based artists, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
C: “I was about 12 years old when I started to realize that there was nothing else I was as passionate about and nothing else that I was naturally more inclined to do. My hometown really got behind me as soon as I realized that. I was able to get a handful of opportunities early on to perform around town.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘Yes I Am’.
C: “Yes I Am” came about when I shared my testimony of how God’s Grace reached my life. We were all just getting to know one another and the producer said “Why don’t we just write a song about how God’s grace saves, and transforms those it reaches.”
What has been your reaction to ‘Yes I Am’s success?
C: “It has been overwhelming to be played and supported by all of these radio stations across the country. I have the privilege of meeting the song’s supporters at shows and I don’t really think I understood how wide the reach was until I started doing shows around the country. I am incredibly privileged that the Lord would use the truth of the song to encourage people.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
C: “It normally starts with melody. At times I will have an entire song mapped out with melody before a single lyric or chord comes to mind. It is kind of a puzzle that you must piece together when you write that way. You have the structure and shape, but you need to fit in a concept that feels natural.”
If you could collab with any music artist, who would it be and why?
C: “I hope to be able to write with this brother in Glory someday, but I would have to say Keith Green. For me, he has been the single most influential artist regarding what exactly you can say in a song.”
How important do you think Christian music is for mainstream music?
C: “I think about a passage that comes to mind for this question. Psalm 40:3 says “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” And similarly in Matthew 5:16, Jesus says “Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.” I think to have truth filled songs that proclaim the excellencies of our God who called us out of darkness is Gospel influence to a lost and dying world. We never know how God in His sovereign redemptive plan will use those songs.”
What is your best piece of advice to young singers who want to incorporate the gospel into their music?
C: “Psalm 119:130 says “The unfolding of your words gives light. It imparts understanding to the simple.” To the artist who is aiming to write songs that will be a gospel influence on its hearers, my encouragement is to take God on his words and his ways. Let us not try to invent our own clever sounding philosophies to perpetuate our own ideas or opinions, but rather let’s trust the Lord and what He says. It is the unfolding of His words that gives light to the simple.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
C: “You can follow my journey on social media. Most of my handles are @thisischristianpaul aside from my twitter which is @thisiscpaul. You can also follow my music on streaming platforms, because the music is where you will really see my journey as I continue to navigate the Christian music world.”
