This music artist’s music needs to be on your favorite playlist!
Singer-Songwriter Miranda Joan is known for her incredible voice and relatable lyrics. She recently released a new single titled ‘Too Much’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop!
We had the amazing honor of talking with Miranda about doing background vocals, surfing, and more!
What inspired you to start your career as an artist?
M: “Hi New Scene Magazine & readers 🙂 I can’t say there was any one point where I decided to start a career as an artist. It was more a series of moments that have ultimately gathered up into a career as an artist. The dots connect when I reflect back on them, but I can say that I was always drawn to music and art and had a creative spirit from the jump. After graduating high school I knew I wanted to pursue music, which led to studying jazz in university and my life in music that followed. It seems bigger now but really it was a bunch of small moments that led to the next and now I live a life in music and art and I am so very grateful for that.”
What was your favorite part about creating your new single ‘Too Much?‘
M: “That’s a tough one because the entire process of creating this song was joyful. Doing a song with upright bass was a first for me though, so it was particularly special to have my friend Ben Williams play on the song. He’s so insanely talented, as are the rest of the musicians on this track, which includes Corey Fonville on drums, Randy Runyon on guitar and CARRTOONS on synths & co-production with myself, so put all that on one track and there’s pretty much no going wrong!”
If you could describe your music in three words, what would they be?
M: “Feeling, story, golden.”
What was it like doing background vocals for stars like Shawn Mendes and Andy Grammer?
M: “Doing backgrounds for super established artists like them is always a trip because it’s an interesting opportunity to see the wizard behind the curtain so to speak. It’s hard work meeting a moment or many moments which then require a team that can support and help you grow. Turns out the magazines are right – Celebrities, they’re just like us. Ha!”
We love watching videos of you performing! What do you enjoy the most about performing?
M: “The best part of performing is being able to connect with the music, with whoever you’re playing with, with your body and voice and then being able to see that connection move outward to others / the audience. It’s a fun and spiritual part of music; the part that’s about sharing and connecting.”
Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?
M: “The list is long… but right now Kaytranada is top of my dream list. Same with Robyn and Anderson Paak. All of those situations sound like the best freaking time I could possibly dream up!”
Do you have any advice for other aspiring young artists?
M: “I’ve tried surfing and I am absolutely terrible but it is riddled with metaphors that just make so much sense to me and I feel are relevant to being an artist and human being. It’s riding waves. It’s eating shit and getting rocked. It’s heading back out to try again. Some waves are longer than others but ultimately it becomes a practice of falling in love with the process of paddling, waiting, paddling, standing up, riding, sometimes (or most of the time) crashing, and the cycle continues. We’re all just riding the waves, trying to tap into the rhythm of living, and if we’re lucky we catch some good ones along the way. I’m still learning but I think I’m at a place now where the process is as soul-filling, rewarding and romantic as the ride.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
M: “All the places! I’m on all the socials and probably most active on Instagram @mirandajoanmusic and my mailing list which you can sign up for www.mirandajoan.com, as well as following/subscribing wherever you listen to music because I will be continuing to release a lot of new music now into the new year! Thanks for having me & reading along xx.”
