Kyle Richardson Talks About His Rising Fame, Adam Lambert, And His New Single ‘Can You Hear Me’

A pop artist you need to know!

Even though Kyle Richardson is based in Vancouver, his music is heard around the world! He recently released a new single titled ‘Can You Hear Me’.

We had the amazing honor of talking with Kyle about his songwriting process, advice for queer music artists, and more!

When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

K: “I first realized I wanted to seriously make a career out of music when I was in high school. I had started taking some casual vocal lessons, and learning some guitar chords, as well as performing at talent shows and in some musical theatre programs. I started putting everything together into some early songwriting attempts and then performing in a band at some coffee shop gigs. Eventually, I started reaching out to some producers in Vancouver and began working with Jeff Dawson. When I got back the final mix of my first professionally-recorded song, I knew this was something I had to keep doing!”

Tell us more about your amazing new single “Can You Hear Me”?

K: “Can You Hear Me” is a really great song to release first off of my upcoming album! It sets the tone with a soulful pop verse that leads into a big rock sounding chorus. It’s all about optimism and being true to yourself and living in the moment, and I really wanted the first single off the album to be big, bold, and positive lyrically!”

What is your songwriting process usually like?

K: “It really depends on the song and the session. I usually prefer to co-write, so sometimes I go in with a lyric idea or two, or a chorus or verse, or a concept of what I want to write about, and we build the song out from that. Sometimes I go in just with a general idea of what kind of sound I want, and we start making melodies and see where it takes us. Sometimes I go in sort of like a blank slate and we just see what the energy in the room is like!”

You have over 1 million streams on Spotify! What has been your reaction to your rising fame?

K: “Any progress is exciting to me! I’m really grateful for the single “Love Is The Answer” for really building my Spotify streams. It was a really fun song to sing and I’m so excited to build off that momentum with my new solo material. “Can You Hear Me” is the first release of many this year and it will be exciting to see how the rest of the year goes!”

How would you describe the music scene in Vancouver?

K: “There are a ton of creatives here! A lot of artists, writers, producers, and industry professionals. It’s inspiring to be here for the creative aspects, as there are always people here to collaborate with.”

If you could collab on a single with any artist, who would it be and why?

K: “I’d love to do a song with Adam Lambert. His artistry and vocal range is just crazy! I think our vocals could sound cool and he’s just such an iconic vocalist. It would be fun to try and keep up!”

Happy Pride! Is there any advice you can give to aspiring artists who are queer?

K: “Happy Pride! I think for queer artists, it’s important to stay true to who you are, and just make art that truly expresses who you are. I think there’s space for everyone, especially now in the streaming era. You just never know what song is going to take off. I also think it’s important to make quality music first and foremost. Invest in yourself and in getting your music to sound as good as possible!”

Where can we follow your amazing journey?

K: “I’m all over social media at @TurnUpTheKyle – I’d love for people to follow me and keep up with my current and future releases!”
