We love their music!
Made up of Eddie Byun and Tim Noyes, Handsome Ghost deserves a spot on your favorite music playlist. They recently released a new single titled ‘April Song’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Tim about their stage name, the music video for ‘April Song’, and more!
How did you get into songwriting?
T: “I played trumpet in the school band throughout most of my childhood/teenage years. At some point in high school I realized I was a little burnt out on it and picked up the guitar instead. When I started trying to learn my favorite songs, I realized they were pretty hard! So I just decided to write my own songs instead. I kept them all to myself for the most part until after college, when I started playing open mics in New York and then everything kind of got going from there.”
You guys recently released a single called “April Song”. How did you guys come up with the name?
T: “The first line of the song is “more snow cover, down on my luck” and that is about an unfortunate Northeast tradition of seeing the snow come down when it should be Springtime. The song itself isn’t about the weather, but since that’s the line that got the song started – I decided to call it “April Song.”
In the song there is a lyric that says “Yeah I’ve been here before / And that’s what’s been holding me back,” what does the lyric reflect?
April Song kind of meanders through a bunch of different ideas and meanings, but at its core it’s about my life in music. I’ve been doing this now for over ten years and Eddie’s really close to that number too. Playing music for as long as we have, you start to see the same things repeat. The same venues on tour, the same hotels after the show. On the recording side, every album is different – but there are common threads to how the music gets made, for sure. The song is more or less acknowledging that this life in music might not be as glamorous as it seemed ten years ago – but I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
What is the theme of the music video?
T: “The music video is focused on the lyric “I’ve been here before, And that’s what’s been holding me back.” The song is about reflecting during one of our many many overnight drives on tour, the kind of drives that make you question what you’re doing with your life. Playfully, the music video is about the idea of purgatory as a never ending Handsome Ghost show.”
You guys are coming with a self-titled album on August 25th! Tell us more about that?
T: “It’s hard not to get reflective when you hit milestones… We’re very close to hitting the ten year mark for Handsome Ghost. That’s a good amount of time! This record is part of that reflection and the questions they bring about… We have a complicated relationship with music, and we work through those things in a record that feels very personal.”
How many songs are on the LP and what do you hope people take away from the new LP?
T: “The LP is 11 songs. Even though this is a really self-reflective album, there are a lot of themes most people can relate to. About questioning how the choices in your life affect your growth. Music is such a personal thing, but I hope people find something in the record that means something to them.”
How long did it take to write/record?
T: “When we first got to recording after Some Still Morning, our intention was to get a few singles out to supplement the record. Very soon we realized that we’re not single guys, we’re album guys. So we took a break to kinda gather ourselves and get going on what became this third LP, HGHG, if you will. From the beginning of those recordings to our final tracking days was around 10 months.”
What does Handsome Ghost mean?
T: “The name started as a joke, but we just ended up going with it. An old music friend of mine had a premonition that he was going to die on a particular date – July 4th, I believe? This sounds very dark, but it was meant as a joke. I guess you kind of have to know this guy. Anyway, he said he was going to come back and haunt everyone as a “handsome ghost” and thus the band name was born.”
