An actress on the rise!
Rising actress Debora is someone that you need to get to know. With several acting credits under her belt, we can’t wait to see where her career takes her!
We had the amazing honor of talking with Debora about performing live, Brazilian representation, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
“I have a vivid memory from when I was thirteen and I had an insight (similar to the lamp that appears above a cartoon’s head when they have an idea) and thought: ‘I am going to be an actress’. It came out of nowhere, but it fulfilled me inside like something I had never felt before. I had no idea where to start, how to do it or where it would lead me but it was one of the most certain decisions I made in my life. It is not just a passion, to me, it is my mission and I am happy to be following it every single day.”
You got your start on the stage-How different is performing on-camera versus being filmed for a role?
D: “Any actor that has done theater will tell you that there is no such feeling as being on stage and performing live. It is thrilling and one of my favorite feelings. But I believe one of the biggest differences is when it comes to being confident in a role. When you are filming a project and you mess up a line, you can just take a deep breath, perhaps have a laugh and start over with a fresh take. But there is no such thing as starting over in theater, it is just ‘go, go, go’ all the time. If you mess up a line or something goes wrong with the props, you have got to improvise and keep going. Actually, not just you, sometimes another actor can be the one to help you in that moment, that happens a lot and has happened to me. I like to say that the phrase ‘the show must go on’ is the mantra of theater.”
If you had to choose, which has been your favorite short film you have been a part of and why?
D: “I am incredibly grateful for every single opportunity I have had in my life and am proud of all the films I have been in. But to highlight one, it has to be ‘The INsiders’. The film is about mental health and this is a topic that I believe is always important to be talked about. The world keeps changing and we never know how a situation may impact one’s life, and that is exactly the story we tell. Besides it, our cast and crew is formed by nine different nationalities and even with the crazy time zones and physical distance, we made it work. Some parts, including mine, were filmed remotely and added to the main filming location, Dubai, and the result is spectacular. Our film is now out for festivals and we have won seven ‘Best Film’ awards so far, which feels surreal. I am grateful that our story and hard work have been well accepted and have had a positive impact in people’s lives.”
You are Brazilian! How important do you think diversity is in the acting industry?
D: “I am! I come all the way from a small town in the countryside of Brazil and am happy to see that representation is starting to be treated in the way it needs and deserves to be. It used to be so common to see characters that were Black, Asian, Indigenous, Latinx etc being created just to fill in a gap in order for studios to say that there was representation involved. When it comes to the Brazilian community, specifically, it warms my heart to see fabulous actors having their space in the Hollywood industry. For example, we have Bruna Marquezine, who I grew up watching and always inspired me, playing Jenny, the first Brazilian SuperHero in the upcoming DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’. We also have a lot of fabulous Brazilians working behind the scenes, for example, Carlos Saldanha who wrote and directed the animated movie ‘Rio’. I am so grateful to know that I can mention names of people from my country that are doing what I also love to do. It warms my heart that little kids have people to look up to, because that was not my
reality. However, even though the industry evolved a lot when it comes to representation, we still have a long way to go. I am a small actor compared to those that I mentioned, but I am content and grateful to know that I am making the difference as well, even if it is just a little bit.”
What are some of your biggest goals for your career?
D: “Do you want me to list them in alphabetical order, to make it easier? I’m just kidding. I have a lot of them, and I mean a lot! Of course, to win an Oscar someday has to be the top dream. But I know that depends a lot more on other people than on me, so I do not make it a practical goal. If it happens one day, I will be over the moon but I am aware that it may never happen, and I am okay with that. I like to make my goals based on what I can control and step by step I know I can achieve bigger things. It also holds a space for good surprises, which are always welcome. I would say my life-long goal is to act in all types of productions: Biopics, Dystopias, Rom-Coms, Thrillers, Christmas cliches, Comedy, Faith-Based, Action, all of them. And with that, I want to play all sorts of characters too. The fun of it all is that no matter if I achieve these goals in indie films or big franchised ones, I will be happily achieving them and doing what I love. And that is all that matters to me.”
