This music artist is incredible!
Brooklyn Michelle is definitely a singer you need to know. Today, she released a new single titled ‘The Girl Not to Worry About’. And spoiler alert: it’s a bop.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Brooklyn about her songwriting process, the San Antonio music scene, and more!
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a music career?
B: “I don’t think I necessarily had to realize it, but I always knew. I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t drawn to music and curious about the creation of every song I liked. Though in high school is when I started releasing songs I had produced on SoundCloud. That’s when I felt like people started to see something in me and got on board with the path I had already seen for myself. The validation of my family and friends around that time helped me see the career path as a real option instead of just a daydream.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single, ‘The Girl Not to Worry About.’
B: “This single is about being thankful for dodging a bullet. Of course, as humans, we initially can’t help feeling angry when people wrong us, but we also need to look at the big picture in these situations and be grateful to free ourselves from someone’s true colors. So this song is a little bit of both emotions. I wanted to show that in the music video as well. Was I hurt? Sure. Did I sit around and mope about it? No. I had all my friends over and threw a party.”
If you had to choose, which has been your favorite song that you have released so far, and why?
B: “Honestly, this one. But I love the unreleased songs on my EP coming out just as much. I’m releasing such a different style next month from what anyone has heard from me before, and I can’t wait to see people dance along rather than cry along for once, haha.”
What is your songwriting process usually like?
B: “Whether I am producing a song myself or working with another producer, I normally start out with a simple instrumental loop that I can play in the car and write lyrics to. Not always, but I usually write the entirety of the lyrics first to figure out the song’s structure before I go back & add more to make the instrumental more intricate. Specifically for “The Girl Not to Worry About,” though I didn’t feel the need to add anything to it. BLKJCKX sent me the beat, and I fell in love with the simplicity of it. We didn’t even alter the structure from the original file one bit. What he sent is what I used. All I did was add vocals.”
How would you describe the music scene in Texas?
B: “I actually couldn’t tell you one country artists that I know of, haha, but I’m also from San Antonio, so not sure how much I can speak on the state as a whole. At least from artists I know specifically, I’d say we mainly have a big rap & hip-hop scene here with super-talented lyricists such as King Khali and producers like Duvin. They’re a pretty iconic duo. Some artists coming out with great R&B music are Shannon Sionna & AJ Bray. I’ve had the pleasure of working with both of them too. I personally love the majority of the music that comes from San Antonio. One of my favorite artists from here is Angel Cintron, who leans more so on the Pop & R&B side. We originally bonded over our love of Bruno Mars & Silk Sonic and have done a few covers together. She is definitely an artist I’d love to continue to collaborate with. I love my city.”
If you could collab with any music artist right now, who would it be and why?
B: “Anderson .Paak. He and Dua Lipa were both big inspirations to this EP coming out, actually. More so to the unreleased songs on the EP that you haven’t heard yet than this single specifically, though. Paak is just one of those artists I always come back to when I’m feeling in a rut, and his music brings me back out of it. I feel like we could make something really fun together one day.”
You are about to release a new EP in July! Can you tease what fans can expect from ‘Facade’?
B: “You can expect to dance! I wrote this EP when I was in a dark place, but I didn’t want to sink deeper into that void, or I’d never come back out of it. I needed to write music to lift me back up. So although the lyrics themselves to every song aren’t necessarily happy, you can still dance through the pain. You could still play it poolside or at a party, and it would fit the vibe just fine. Every song is perfect for summer.”
