Music Artist Elliot Lee is a must-have on your favorite playlist. With over 10 Million streams on Spotify, the artist is just getting started. Elliot recently released a new single titled ‘Fun’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Elliot about busking, the stereotypes around autism, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
E: “It’s always been a dream lurking in the back of my mind. I’d sit in class and imagine myself jumping around on stage and making music videos and stuff, but it never felt tangible or achievable in any way. I went to college for pre-medical and along the way I fell into a dark pit mentally. I realized that I wasn’t living life for me, and if I stayed on that path I wasn’t gonna be alive much longer. At first making music was just a way for me to put into words my thoughts and experiences that I didn’t feel comfortable telling directly to anyone in my life, but I realized it was the only thing I can really imagine myself doing even if it meant I had to couch surf to stay afloat.”
Tell us about your amazing new single ‘Fun’.
E: “I wanted to make a disco dance anthem that captures melancholy in a way that bands like ABBA have achieved. Fun is about how alienating the industry can be for people like me who don’t fit into a visual or physical mold, when execs and businesspeople just look at artists like a soulless product. Sometimes I wish I could just act and look the way they want me to so that they’d take me seriously, but if I did that I know I’d lose what gives me my purpose in this world.”
How would you describe the music scene in Brooklyn?
E: “I mainly got my start busking and doing open mics then running off before socializing so I’m not too familiar with the music scene as a whole. I also never really go to live shows because they’re not compatible with my sensory issues, but I wish I could find a way to be more connected with the local scene!”
We have to talk about your 2nd tour! Were you expecting such a big turnout?
E: “When I got the call about opening for Waterparks I knew immediately that it was easily the biggest opportunity I’ve ever snagged in my career. I’ve been dreaming of opening for them for years because I adore their relationship with their fans, and I hoped I’d someday have the opportunity to impress all the cool people in their fandom and hopefully sing some stuff on stage that speaks to them. So far every show has been sold out, and the room is already packed when I play every night which is such a wild experience!! Every night I get to meet dozens of super sick people at my merch table.” 🙂
You have over 10 Million streams on Spotify! Is there anything you want to say to your fans?
E: “You guys are the coolest people on this planet, and I mean that with all my heart!! Bubblegum Soldiers are like no one else.” ♡
How important do you think autism awareness is in the music industry?
E: “I think a lot more artists are autistic than they realize. The stereotypes around autism make it seem like this big scary disease that ruins everyone’s lives, so people never want to consider it when looking for answers to why they are struggling. For me, my diagnosis turned my life around for the better because I finally knew why I struggled so deeply my whole life with so many things that are supposed to be easy. I wish the world in general was more friendly for us, and that includes the music industry.”
What is your best piece of advice to aspiring music artists who are also in the LGBTQIA+ community?
E: “There are safe places for us even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. I talked about my gender dysphoria on stage in places like Georgia and North Carolina, and there were people in the crowd cheering for me anyway. The best feeling ever is when you meet people who tell you that you’re inspiring them just by being you.” ♡
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
E: “I’m all over online!! I’ve been tweeting a lot lately at @elliotleemusic, I post tour vlogs on Instagram @elliotleeofficial tiktok @elliotleeofficial and YouTube @elliotleemusic. And my music is on all platforms!! 🙂.”
