This amazing music artist is back!
After her ‘Infested’ EP back in 2018, we have been invested in Maya Donovan’s music career. Today, she released a new single titled ‘We Should Get Dinner’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Maya about reproductive rights, and more!
What is the story behind your amazing new single, ‘We Should Get Dinner’?
M: “I wrote this song while I was processing gradual shifts that were happening in some of my
closest friendships. The shifts had a lot to do with navigating new priorities of our young adult
lives – new romantic relationships, jobs, etc – and although all relationships are complex and
maintaining them can be complex too, I felt like so much of the distance simply had to do with
friends not texting me back. So I was mad and I wrote a song about it!”
How would you describe your music in one word?
M: “I don’t know how to answer this without sounding extremely corny, but I suppose the word that I
hope describes my music is “comforting.” In a way that sounds backwards because my music is
largely about the darkest thoughts and experiences in my life, but on that same coin, I hope that
some of the pain I describe in my music is recognizable to other people. I hope that the comfort
is found in chipping away at the loneliness that usually accompanies that kind of pain.”
What do you think is the state of the music industry today, and where do you think it will go in
the future?
M: “It’s cool to see more of an emphasis on DIY/bedroom-style music right now. Spaces like TikTok
have really democratized the music industry in the sense that anyone with a phone can kind of
have a hit. At the same time though, it’s definitely made the industry feel more crowded and as
an “emerging artist” it can feel even harder to keep people’s attention because there are so
many other artists doing similar things.
In terms of the future, I guess all I can say is that I hope music doesn’t have an AI apocalypse!! I
don’t know if you’ve heard of the software that replicates artists’ voices to make it sound like
they’re singing whatever you want them to sing, but it’s terrifying!”
Who is a musician you’d love to collaborate with in the future?
M: “Oh man, there are so many contemporary artists I am in awe of and would love to work with one
day. Someone that immediately comes to mind is Madison Cunningham. I think she’s simply
incredible. Listening to her music is like a full-body experience for me. She’s such a gifted
songwriter and a truly virtuosic instrumentalist & singer. I’ve seriously daydreamed about just
singing backup on one of her songs (of course I know every word and every harmony).”
Where is your dream venue to perform?
M: “I know I should probably say a big venue like Radio City or Madison Square Garden, but
honestly, I love playing in small rooms to people who are close enough to me to make eye
contact. With that said though, there is something so magical about playing for larger crowds
and really feeling like the room is in sync with you. I hope I can translate the intimate connection
I feel with the audience in my smaller shows to bigger venues someday!”
Aside from music, what other ventures would you love to pursue?
M: “I’ve always been very passionate about reproductive rights and ensuring access to resources
around sexuality and sexual health. I used to work as a sex ed teacher and facilitated high
school workshops centering on consent and communication. In my personal life, I aim to be as
approachable and non-judgemental as possible, especially when it comes to people’s sexual
worlds. I think we all deserve pleasure and the ability to make informed decisions about our
bodies.”
Can we expect to see more music from you in the future?
M: “Absolutely! I’ll be releasing a couple other singles in the next few months which will ultimately
come together as a little EP.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
M: “You can keep up with me on Instagram @MayaDonovanMusic, TikTok @MayDonovan, and
visit my website: MayaSings.com! I also have a residency at The Bitter End in NYC and play
there about every 6 weeks, so come see me live and say hi!”
