Today you released a new song called ‘F**k You’! Why did you title the song ‘F**k You’?

L: “Because I had this one really specific person I had to tell to go fuck themselves haha!”

How does your music reflect your personal life and experiences?

L: “In this case absolutely. The song is pretty autobiographical and helped me say what I needed to say to someone in my past.”

Your song “F**k You” is from your forthcoming EP, Forevermore, which is due out on Friday, June 2. Why did you release the song before the album’s release?

L: “I thought it would be fun to release a single ahead of my EP since it’s my first time putting out pop music. I wanted to do it with a splash so I chose to make “F**k You” the single. It’s a pretty fun and provocative song that I thought would make a statement.”

You also released a music video for “F**k You” today. What was your vision for the music video?

L: “I’m lucky enough to have incredibly talented family members working in Hollywood so when I told my cousin, Nate, that I was releasing music this year he asked if I wanted a music video and I said yes! The story might be mine, but the visuals are all his brainchild. I’ll let him describe what he had in mind when he brought this to life.

To me [Nate], the song felt very tongue-in-cheek, naturally. It reminded me of the idea that sometimes in relationships, the person you can’t wait to see first when you wake up in the morning can quickly become someone you never want to see again. But, musically expressing that idea in a more playful and cathartic way. So, for the music video, I wanted to try and show that through equally playful and “poppy” visuals to try and match the energy of the song, while still telling the bitter story at the center of it. Our intent was to have the video look fun on the surface, but ultimately invite you to replay and pause it on different pages of the scrapbook, revealing the details that tell the more honest and broken-hearted story behind the track. Doing this through an aesthetic scrapbook of memories just seemed like the natural fit for that kind of angle.”

What can people expect from the EP?

L: “From this EP, people can expect a fusion of indie, electro, R&B and pop. Each song has its own flavor but they’re all infectious, melodic and written to keep you hitting repeat.”

How long did it take for you to write the EP?

L: “The first time I put pen to paper on the lyrics for one of these songs was over 3 years ago. So it’s been quite a while in the making. The pandemic definitely slowed things down but I kept songwriting, producing and composing until I had a cohesive body of work. I’m proud of what I achieved and the fact that almost everything you hear was written, sung, composed, played, and produced by me!”

What is the inspiration behind the album?

L: “I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid but now that I’m older and have more life experiences behind me I wanted to synthesize that journey into an EP. I decided to call the EP “Forevermore” because that’s the name of one of my favorite songs on it and it feels apropos. Forever and then some more is how long I’ve been in love with making music and how long I plan to keep making music.”

You are currently based in Seattle and will be moving to LA soon! Do you think you will get more experience when you move to LA in terms of songwriting?

L: “When the pandemic hit I left London where I’d been studying and moved to be closer to some of my family in Seattle. LA and the whole music industry was kind of shuttered during that time and I needed a spot to be creative and develop more as a musician and songwriter.

Now that I’m headed to LA I hope I get to expand my network and meet other people who are just as passionate about making music as I am. Whether that’s songwriting on other people’s projects or getting to collaborate on my own songs with other artists we’ll just have to see. I had a lot of fun in London and met some incredibly talented industry vets who helped me become the producer I am today. I can’t wait to repeat that process in LA and see who I find!”

In college, you got to study with Grammy-winning producers Riton (Mark Ronson, Diplo, The Chemical Brothers) and Alex Metric (Avicii, Charli XCX, Snow Patrol). What did that experience teach you?

L: “Oh my god everything. Where to begin? I met Henry (Riton) and Alex Metric at a party in North London and just started hanging out around their place learning what I could about analog synthesis, the music business, sampling and how to make a hit. I already had a background in music theory, songwriting and production but I didn’t always know how to put those skills together to make something catchy and coherent.

I definitely spent most of the time in the studio listening, incubating, and processing. I would go home or to the studios at my college and try to put what I learned to use, but it really took me a few years for the lightbulb to go off. Now I can see what Alex and Henry were geniuses at so clearly. I just had to come by my own style honestly and with time, patience and lots of trial and error. I spent most of my time with Henry who was working on remixes, dance tracks and some dancier pop hits so I had to learn what I could and apply that to the indie pop genre. It wasn’t always an easy transition from learning the ins and outs of house/dance production and bringing those tools to an indie pop project, but it definitely gave me a taste of how to make a track as catchy as possible.”
