An artist that is bringing country and pop together!
Music artist Laine Lonero is quickly becoming one to know, especially after her bop ‘Back to Me’. Today, she released a new single titled ‘Broke’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Laine about Megan Maroney, Tourettes Syndrome, and more!
When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
L: “Well, I started singing when I was about 6 officially with lessons and recitals and moved on to musical theater and singing the National Anthem. I actually did my first full band performance when I was 11 years old. My parents knew then that I needed to do something in music. Besides voice lessons, guitar and piano lessons, theater, and choir, I also was in competition dance for 12 years. I guess you could say I loved being on stage. I think when I was about 13, I went to a song camp in California and ended up getting the opportunity to record songs for KidzBop. I really enjoyed the recording process and had already started writing down ideas for songs, so my mom reached out to some people in Nashville, we headed there, and I started writing.
If you ask my Paw Paw, he would say I was writing since I was about 3 in my head. He has films of me singing and dancing and making up songs in the backyard. Working with Go Long Entertainment allowed me the opportunity to play my first round in Nashville when I was 14. After that, I was lucky enough to be one of the winners of the Nashville Dreamin contest when I was 15 and got the honor of playing at the Listening Room. I continued to work with writers coming back and forth to Nashville from Louisiana and I am now a student at Belmont’s Mike Curb College of Music Business in the prestigious songwriting program. I plan to continue to write, perform and release music.”
Tell us more about your amazing new single ‘Broke.’
L: ‘Broke’ almost didn’t happen. Amanda Cooksey and I tried a bunch of times to get together and write and we finally made it happen. I actually performed it the next night after we wrote, and I knew then it needed to be released. I think we both had been through a string of relationships that just fizzled out due to guys just wanting to have fun and not take anything too seriously. Both of us had been hurt in relationships, and we just felt like guys sometimes need to be humbled. We thought maybe if they were knocked down a few pegs, they could have a better understanding of what it feels like to be on the other side of heartbreak.”
If you could collab on a song with any artist, who would it be and why?
L: “If you are talking writing, I would probably have to say without a doubt, Noah Cyrus. Her song ‘Lonely’ was actually the inspiration for my last release. I love her lyrics and I am all about a sad song. No matter how hard I try, it ends up like that. I try to convince myself I am writing a happy song, but it always ends up being a sad one with a happier sounding melody.
I am also really loving Megan Moroney. I am sure everyone is saying that though. She is definitely a thing right now, and I love her style. I know most people would say ‘Tennessee Orange’ but I love ‘I’m Not Pretty.’ Hopefully one day I will get the opportunity to write with her. In the meantime, she can just pass her wardrobe my way when she’s finished with it.”
If you had to choose, what has been your favorite song you have released?
L: “If you are asking up until now, I would have to say “Back to Me.” I wrote this one with Michael Farren. I have always loved singing ballads. Secondly, this song had a lot of meaning to me and really helped me get through a very tough time in my life. Moving to Nashville was difficult my first semester. Not only had I moved to a city 8 hours away and knew nobody, my boyfriend broke up with me right after making the move. It was actually the night before I started my first day of class. That was a lot of fun. I went to class though. It wasn’t the semester I had always hoped for in moving away and going to college, but things are much better now. I have great friends, I joined a sorority, and I am finally moving into a house off campus.”
How would you personally describe the music scene in Nashville?
L: “I guess I would say that it’s competitive, while still being extremely welcoming. I have learned that you have to earn your place here and just be patient with the process. Doing songwriters rounds is an awesome way to meet other songwriters and to find people to collaborate with. There is so much talent in Nashville.”
What advice can you give to young girls with Tourette Syndrome?
L: “This is actually the first time I have talked about it publicly. It’s just part of who I am and I really don’t let it get in my way. I hate even talking about it because I feel like there are so many people with worse symptoms than myself. I am fortunate that I have a great doctor in Nashville who has helped to lessen the tics with treatment. Tics tend to be worse with stress and with my lifestyle, I constantly have something going on whether it be college, writing, performing, my sorority, etc. When I first moved to Nashville and was away from my family and friends, starting at a new school, and like I said previously my boyfriend had broken up with me, the tics got to be pretty severe. I kept pushing through though. I have found that if I don’t let it bother me, it doesn’t seem to bother others. If someone can’t deal with it and look beyond the disease, then they aren’t a true friend anyway. Just be you and don’t let others make you feel different. Keep that small circle of people around who accept you for you.
I would also highly recommend getting an emotional support animal. My life really changed when I got my GIGI (a 7.5 lb. Shihpoo). She is my world and whenever I have a rough day, she is always there for me providing unconditional love. Very thankful to Belmont for allowing me to have her.”
You perform a lot! What do you enjoy the most about performing live?
L: “I really love the interaction and in Nashville the crowds can be so fun. I really enjoy seeing the reactions to a punchline in a song, especially when it’s funny. I love bantering with the crowd and unfortunately, it’s usually the guys I am picking on.”
Where can we follow your amazing journey?
L: “My biggest platform is probably Instagram, but I am also active on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter. I also have a website where you can find updates regarding my releases. Definitely make sure to follow me on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon music, as well YouTube.”
