We love this indie-pop artist!
Singer-songwriter Ashley Elle made a great impression in the music industry with her 2021 bop ‘how do you stop loving someone?’. Today, she released a new single titled ‘Heavy, Heavy, Heavy’.
We had the amazing honor of talking with Ashley about balancing school with her career, the LA music scene, and more!
What inspired you to be a musician?
A: “I’ve been fascinated by music ever since I can remember. When I was young, like 5 or 6, I remember picking out CDs to put in this little CD player we had at my house and getting so excited. When I got my first ever iPod nano, lol, I loved scrolling through iTunes downloading song after song. I shared an Apple ID account with my dad so all of the music he downloaded, I automatically listened too. The Fray is a band that really showed me what good music is and listening to their first two albums is so nostalgic and comforting to me. After that I just gravitated towards the piano and guitar while being captivated by Taylor Swift. Eventually, my biggest dream became “to make music!”
How would you describe the music scene in LA?
A: “The music scene in LA is super diverse and dynamic. I think there is a place for every genre
and style throughout the city. Being a musician in LA is super cool because there are so many
talented songwriters, producers, and artists that all influence me to want to learn more and work
harder on my music.”
What was the inspiration behind your upcoming song, ‘Heavy, Heavy, Heavy?‘
A: “I wrote “Heavy, Heavy, Heavy” this past fall when I was studying abroad in London. Although I loved the city and my experience, it also brought up some difficult emotions. ‘Heavy, Heavy, Heavy’ is a song about struggling with the complexities of life. I wrote it at a time when I felt so much pressure and responsibility trying to deal with growing up and the challenges we face.”
What is your creative process when you write new music?
A: “I honestly write when inspiration hits. I pick up the guitar or sit down at the piano daily, but some days are filled with just singing songs that make me happy and not trying to write. Then I have days where I start three or four songs and I really feel inspired and motivated. I usually will bring a song I’ve started whether it’s a few lines of a verse or a full chorus to my producer and friend Cazz Brindis. I’ll play whatever I have written and then we’ll talk about the story behind the song. I really like to paint a clear picture of the feeling and story I am trying to reflect in the song. Sometimes I go into the studio with no concrete idea and Cazz and I will just play on guitar or piano until we find a melody we love!”
If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be?
A: “One thousand percent, Gracie Abrams. I remember when she first started singing and being so
fascinated by her sound. I’ve been to three of her shows and just listening to her live is insanely inspiring. Her songwriting and music is so authentic and relatable to her listeners. She is definitely one of my forever favorites.”
How do you juggle being in school and building a music career?
A: “Going to college was fully my decision. I got really lucky with my parents being open to the idea
of me taking a gap year if I wanted to fully focus on my music. However, with COVID happening
right when I graduated high school in 2020, I thought it was super important to continue my
education while also getting the social experiences of going to a university. I am so happy and
grateful for the past few years out in Los Angeles. Although I enjoy learning and participating in
all the traditional college activities, I also love music so much. On the days I don’t have class, I
spend my time writing and/or recording in the studio. I definitely think I could be further in my
career if I was just doing music, but I wouldn’t trade my memories at college and all of the
people I’ve met for the world. When I graduate in a year, it’ll then be 100% music, so I am super
eager for that!”
Can we expect to see new music from you in the future?
A: “Yes! You can totally expect to see new music from me throughout this year. I am going to be
releasing a few singles and then my first ever EP before 2023 ends!”
Where can we follow your incredible journey?
A: “Everything will be posted on my website, AshleyElleMusic.com. You can follow along to see life
and music related stuff on my Instagram @aashleyelle and my Tiktok @ashleyelle. Thank you!!”
